Option A: It's a beautiful sunny morning so I thought that I'd drag the old girl out for a bimble to work

Option B: I've spent far too much money on the new bike this month, it's the day before payday, the MGB is running on fumes, I can't afford a tank of petrol but the Morgan has half a tank.

Either way, a nice way to start the day.

From Poolewe on the Northern loop, onto the Ullapool road to Inverness, then Grantown on Spey, over the Grampians, so Tomintoul, The Lecht, Ballater, and over to Aboyne. Apart from skirting Inverness, nothing on the roads. Nothing behind us all the way. Two or three overtakes, but total driving bliss for 4 hours. Pics to follow later. The Gairloch loop has stupendous views, as Ewan mentioned.

We did almost that exact run 4 years ago Dave, wonderful roads but very wet back then.

Parked the Mog up in Ypres in the industrial bit full of shiny car showrooms and walked into the town to find the Menin Gate to watch the 8pm evening Ceremony of wreath laying, it was amazing how many people go to watch

Amazing place, the museum is wonderful and should be a school visit for all UK schools….less we forget….

Agreed - used to run a Battlefields trip every year. After about ten years of it I stepped back, and unfortunately no-one else was prepared to take it on.

Took my Dad over a few years ago, and gave him the same tour - his Dad was Machine Gun Corps in WW1 so quite poignant.

I find the museum in Ypres fascinating and chilling at the same time. The exit lobby with the lists of wars since 1918 (with no gaps) is particularly sobering.

Vimy Ridge is also a very sobering place.

The Devonshires is the one that always gets me. Very small, and you can see location of German Machine Gun post that mowed them all down from the Cemetary. They are all buried in the Trench where they were stationed and they all knew they would die the minute they stepped out of the trench. Any requests to change the battle plan was refused.

There's a memorial stone outside with the words 'The Devonshires held this trench, and the Devonshires hold it still'.

One of the War Poets is there - W N Hodgson. I used to stand next to his grave and read his poem to the kids. I got a bit of dust in my eye everytime....
