What is the procedure for adjusting the handbrake on the M3W.

Is this done on the handbrake cable or is their and adjusting cam on the brake drum?

The brake shoes are self adjusting, the hand brake cable can be adjusted using the adjuster under the car about 200 mm to the rear of the handbrake lever.

I found it darn near impossible to adjust unless I removed a bunch of stuff

You shouldn't need to remove anything, working under the car you may need to cut a cable tie which is holding the handbrake cable to the chassis tube but you can then just grab the cable and pull it down slightly and then with two 17mm spanners adjust. If the car is an early car (2012/3) it may still have a centre cover on the floor which will need removing, from underneath,.

Is it the same procedure to adjust the handbrake if you have had the rear disc brake conversion?

No the handbrake pads on the caliper are not self adjusting. The handbrake pads each have hex socket grub screw to facilitate adjustment, the one on the wheel side is particularly hard to access, doable with a 1/4 drive socket drive with flexible drive extension. The handbrake cable can be adjusted from under the car.
