My wife has had one knee replaced in March & another is planned in Q3. She wants to go hybrid but not MG given our 5 month tale of woe on my ZS EV.

She currently has a manual VW Polo & wants something of a similar size. Can anyone recommend a suitable car please.

I know nothing about all this fancy electric stuff John, but you should look at Toyota. They seem to have led the tech for a long time.

I would second that re Toyota. There is a good choice of cars in and around Polo size too.

Were pure electric an option, Mrs F recently purchased a Mini Aceman and we have found it to be excellent. A few minor issues with getting it to play nicely with Octopus Intelligent Go (which we sorted ourselves) but other than that faultless.

I've had a Mazda 2 for over a year and both Mrs W and I are very pleased with it. It came top in the Which? survey of owners. The Toyota Yaris is the same car, but the Mazda dealer offered us a better deal.

Cheers guys. She has range anxiety I don't. The MG may have a software server issue but is cheap to run & great fun. To me the HEV route is a complex solution but I know my place. hide

The Memsahib has a Lexus LBX Hybrid which would be a similar size to your VW Polo - think Toyota Yaris Vanden Plas version!
It is so easy to drive it almost drives itself and has a 10 year guarantee. Had it 18months so far with no problems. The only downside are the modern gizmos fitted to all cars now that can be annoying.
We have it down to 2 pressings of the touch screen to turn most things off but the bugger still keeps telling you to stop for a coffee and we even got an email from the car recently, I kid you not.

Joking aside lovely car, am sure your wife would love it.

My girlfriend has a Toyota Corolla hybrid, totally Toyota reliable of course and amazingly economic -with a nice big hatch for easy loading, Dave W is right that is why all the Uber drivers here run Toyota Prius , Corolla or Camry-with a small no. going to Tesla.

John, we ran a few Golf PHEVs as company cars and they were always praised; however, as the others have said, Toyota seems to have the edge and when the GTEs were up for replacement, Toyotas replaced them.

I remember testing an early generation Golf PHEV or maybe a full E, jumped in range said 50 something, we lived on a steep hill, surrounded by hills to get anywhere - set off out and after around just 2 miles, the range dropped to 17, after a couple of days of farting about checking it was fully charged, dropped it back at the dealers and ordered an i3 REx

how about the new PHEV Ford Transit Connect van 😂 (short wheelbase) I get 53 mpg without plugging it in (I never plug it in) Great leg room, and it even comes with rear seats plus a bulkhead that folds up into the cabin to give you a much larger load area.
Perfect for collecting building materials if you’re into DIY. Easy to get in and out and it’s even exempt from congestion charges too (well, it is in Oxford anyway)

What’s not to like?
