My fuel filter is strapped to the back of the wooden frame behind the spare wheel brace. Can I get to it and replace by removing the spare wheel brace, ie from on top? I presume the fuel pump is more complicated and might need the tank dropped to get clear access

I don't know if it’s the same as my 2011 Plus4. I changed the fuel filter on that at about 50k miles as a matter of routine.
I used a Mann WK730/5
Removing the spare wheel plate (including 3 fiddly nuts/bolts at bottom), the filter was removed by simply releasing the saddle clamp that secured it and it can be slid out without any interference to frame etc. Note the direction arrow on filter body.
Beware to release fuel pressure before removing pipes by running engine and then removing fuel pump fuse allowing engine to run to a stop.
Regards your other query, sorry, cant recall positioning of pump.

BHM have parts manuals that show how it fits but from memort take off the spare & remove the tool tray to get access on S1 3l
