I had a Decca navigator on my first yacht in the mid 90's before GPS took over. Got me past Portland Bill in thick fog when we had to hug the coast due to foul tide. That and depth sounder plus radar

As a land lubber that sounds like scary stuff to me for a civvy to be doing.

After switch off, two of us were tasked with the decommissioning of the sites (we had previously commissioned a lot of them) and one of the nasties to be disposed of responsibly were the 26 bandspread capacitors which were 2' alloy cubes with dielectrics cooled with Shell Diala"B" Venezuelan fine oil which was highly carcogenic.

We pumped each sites worth into 50 gallon drums and Viridor came and we signed them off site. However later as we were leaving one site near Barry in S Wales to overnight at the hotel in Cardiff what did we see on a roundabout but said Viridor truck on it's side spewing oil everywhere with police, and fire in attendance- a cool beer and nice meal meant he was on his own as we had the disposal note in hand. Even when you do things right you can't control things South of you.
