Sitting on the patio with my ipad, Guinness, choccies listening to the approaching thunder to the South...Bristol Channel/Somerset/North Devon area getting the storm.Aha! One or two raindrops....gentle breeze and fresher air....rumbling getting louder. I love a good thunderstorm in the night. Better than the smell of napalm in the morning. Off on a short Taffmog noggin run and lunch tomorrow to Brechfa. Rain or shine. I'm back...first flash. Storm centre several miles away to the south.

Love the Ile de Re but a localised cloudburst failed to dent the heatstroke risk over the last few days. Onwards to Saumer on the Loire today - 40deg C blast furnace but thank god this hotel has AC.

Had to curtail gardening jobs today as it hit just over 34deg But this dragonfly really made my day, spotted at our wildlife pond we dug only last year - Broad Bodied Chaser, I think ? ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2026/06/26/Dragonfly.jpg)

Completed a 200 mile round trip yesterday to Doncaster area travelling through the hottest parts of the UK ever. Despite traffic jams on return Morton performed perfectly with temp gauge staying stubbornly just below centre scale. This has to be a tribute to the Ford Cyclone engine cooling system coupled with SiFab ally radiator. I wish I could say the driver coped as well . It was a treat to hear cracks of thunder and torrential rain early this morning though.

I did a similar trip in our EV yesterday, perfect for the first half hour, then the car decided, I assume because of the high temperatures and high demand on the batteries (65 mph) that it needed to focus on maintaining a reasonable battery temperature and switched off the cabin aircon. Cue sweltering conditions and open windows.
We played a game, there were countless EV’s with windows open, could this be a weakness in the design and operation of EV’s? Certainly I think we would have been better off in the Plus Six yesterday!

Last year, I re-did the garage flat roof. I tend to do this every year, with a fancy acrylic gunge paint. Last year I got white instead of grey, I suspect it may have been cheaper. Anyway, yesterday the weather station on the garage roof showed 40.3c in full sun, and 30.7c in the house. This morning in the house downstairs had remained at 30c, even though outside was 26c early doors. But in the garage was 23.8c. So it's making me wonder if white roofs are the future. The garage usually gets insanely hot in warm weather. Often 30c mid-day.

White will reflect heat better than any other colour (or lack of).

We were out in our Volvo PHEV on Wednesday with aircon on. The range shortened significantly due to the aircon working overtime. Fortunately with a PHEV I have the ICE available

My BEV was fine. Delivering 3.5 m/ kWh with the aircon on.
