Re-greasing and adjusting the steering rack is a very worthwhile little job that greatly improves the light feel of driving the four/four. Wash out the old grease replace grease with your choice of something sticky. Replace any rubber boots that look periched or split. Adjust the pressure on the spring above the plastic bush thingy - this should only need a small adjustment by a couple of flats to the bolt and of course not to forget the locking tabs afterwards. Re attach making sure to properly tighten up everything and turn up the remaining washer tabs to lock all bolts in place. Vital is the careful road test afterwards, to be sure all is feeling nice and as it should be. Choose a quiet and slow approach. Double check for tightness of every nut and bolt afterwards.

Worth noting and checking the folded steel bracket (in the centre of above) that the track rods attach to, for the start of any hairline cracks.

This one had terminal failure

To my mind the rack pre-load via the spring loaded plastic part gives the most noticeable improvement to steering feel. Before doing this its important to disassemble all associated parts by removing large locknut, hollow threaded part, spring and slotted plastic part that bears on rack, all of which can be done in situ. The latter can expand with grease within rack and not allow free movement within hollow part which prohibits the sprung pre-load from working. If necessary the plastic can be lightly sanded down, just enough to provide free moving fit within and against spring.

Correct adjustment of pre-load makes the steering less lively if previously was set too loose. Mine had no noticeable play prior to adjustment but steering was noticeably calmer afterwards.
