Are there any “high mileage” cars out there - anyone have any coolant leaks or issues that the B48 is famous for as time and miles move on?

I now have 48,000 km on the odometer. I wouldn't exactly call that “high mileage.” So far, I haven't had any problems with the B48 engine.

The B48 is a famously bulletproof motor. However, my Six refused to start in the rain on a few occasions and the cure was to remove the earth lead from the battery,, wait a while, reconnect and the car always started. I assume this reset the ECU which didn't like damp conditions.

MY23 with 23k miles. No coolant issues at all. Original radiator. One drop of coolant seen but that was from a coolant. A tweek to the clip sorted it and a check of as many other jubilee clips as possible. All good and secure. I think I have topped the coolant up with about 1 cup of water in 3 years. I miss a dipstick though. A simple check compared to the on-board built in with engine running at temperature one. A bigger fuel tank would be nice.

I miss a dipstick though. A simple check compared to the on-board built in with engine running at temperature one. Isn't the inbuilt check for the oil level? I didn't think there was one for the coolant, which, I agree, would benefit from an easy 'eyeball' check.

Yes the oil check is done by the car's system and displays on the screen. It must be done with the engine at running temperature so I do it when stopping after a distance travelled, usually when back at home or a base hotel on a trip. For the coolant others have made a dipstick to check the level. The level indicator is a label stuck on the outside of the expansion tank. On my car my middle finger just touches the coolant so that is my dipstick. NO....I don't lick my finger! One important thing......the B48 engine is a bugger for coolant replacement! Air locks are difficult to remove. I have heard that a vacuum unit is used to purge airlocks. Luckily the coolant has a decent life in use.
