Hermetica magnificent charter sailboat - Waverley and Royal Castle moored up to the boat float, now run by St Austell Brewery.

Two striking luxury yachts have been attracting attention in Dartmouth this week, with their towering masts and sleek designs making them hard to miss.

The larger of the two is Hermetica, a 52-metre (172ft) sailing yacht whose mast has dominated the town's skyline while moored in the harbour.

Built by Dutch shipyard Vitters in 2010 and designed by Hoek Design, Hermetica is among the world's largest sailing yachts. The vessel can accommodate up to 10 guests across five luxury suites, with space for a crew of seven.

Constructed with an aluminium hull, GRP superstructure and teak decks, the yacht has a cruising speed of 11 knots and can reach a top speed of 15 knots. With a gross tonnage of 279GT and a beam of 9.5 metres, she ranks 923rd in the world by overall yacht length and is the eighth-largest yacht ever built by Vitters.

Joining Hermetica in Dartmouth has been the 46-metre motor yacht Constance.

Built by renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship and completed in 1986, Constance features exterior styling by De Voogt and interiors by Glade Johnson Design. The yacht underwent a major refit earlier this year.

The vessel accommodates up to 10 guests in five suites, including a VIP cabin, and carries a crew of up to nine. Built with a steel hull, aluminium superstructure and teak decks, she is powered by twin 900hp Caterpillar diesel engines.

Constance cruises comfortably at 11 knots, reaches a top speed of 14 knots and has a range of around 3,800 nautical miles. An onboard stabilisation system helps provide a smoother journey, while freshwater tanks capable of holding around 25,800 litres allow the yacht to undertake extended voyages.

The two luxury vessels have become an eye-catching sight for residents and visitors alike.









Waverley crashed into the sea wall in Torquay en route from Dartmouth to Weymouth with a quick stop to pick up passengers in Torquay. No enduring damage was the report.

I think I have typed previously of an acquaintance who used a Transit van wheel mounted in his back garden to bend the pipes round to create the boiler tubes for the steam engine he was making in his shed for his vessel named Orca, which he kept at Kip marina on the Clyde... A really talented chap, sadly missed.

I think the city of Glasgow sewerage/sludge vessels, Dalmarnock and Shieldhall were both triple expansion steam boiler equipped, they used to take organised groups such as clubs and pensioner parties on a day trip, "doon the water," when carrying out their sludge dumps in the Clyde estuary off the isle of Arran. The "passengers" where treated to lunch while the vessels took a wide turn while disposing of their cargo, just South of the measured mile.... I well remember the day I got my timing wrong and sailed through it...while heading for Campbeltown...!

Shieldhall is certainly triple expansion steam engine. I will get a ride on her one day Now operates out of Southampton, all volunteer run as far as I can see. If Dalmarnock was a sister vessel she'd be the same power unit wise.

On the way back through the North Sea on the QM2 we passed the oldest passenger ship...100 years old. As described by the first officer on the QM2. I'll try digging up her name as I missed it on the "tannoy". I'll post pics asap. Just got home so unpacking. She was apparently headed to meet up with the Waverley. Choppy sea and she was "moving" a bit. Several passengers up on deck as we passed.

What voyage were you on ?

Queen Mary2. Southampton round trip....Norway, Hamburg, Zerbrugge ( diverted to Le Havre).
Been there before but always enjoyable. 50th anniversary celebration.
Troll Road trip from Alesund was great. Impressive road for driving, our bus driver was great!
Visited Belsen on an organised trip. Very humbling.
Missed Ypres battlefield due to change in port.

Nice trip around and a pilgrimage to a Gestapo Camp is always a totally humbling eye opener and reminder of how evil so called humans can be - a lot like Israel now, the irony of this is beyond belief.

The camp hasn't been restored. A museum has been built and it contains many photos of the victims. No huts or buildings rebuilt. There are monuments and gravestones for several family members, including Anne and her sister Margot Frank
There are many mass graves preserved with from 800 to 5000 victims.
Belsen was the main central camp with many nearby camps.
The evil from back then is being repeated. People and groups with the power to put their ideology into practice are still doing so.

Being of Polish Jewish stock I shall never unsee the glass cabinets full of spectacles and shoes of children in Auschwitz - don't ever ask me to forgive the Krauts as the simple fact is they are easily led and to this day love a uniform.

They had destroyed my Fathers family before his eyes so he walked to France, hitched a ride across the channel on a French boat (even then they could be bought for a bottle of scotch) and fronted up at the nearest RAF Station letting them know he wanted to fly a Spitfire and kill Krauts as he was 16 and had already learnt to fly in a Jungmeister ironically in Poland so he got in a Tiger Moth and showed them how it should be flown to the absolute limit side slipping his way in to a three pointer.

His dreams were realised many times over although the pain would never heal for him I'm sure but he thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and flew up until his untimely death at 64 having instructed hundreds of pupils as a CFI of two Norfolk Flying Groups.

My late Father was a brilliant pilot his Log Books tell me, but at everything else he made a complete mess of his life - so once again we have opposing views as the only thing I ever listened and learnt from him was flying.

That and not having a mother from 18 months made me robust and independent - the only advise I heed is from my wife btw,, the rest is static on the air waves.

It's all about sloping shoulders of the Civil Service or Private Enterprise really and I have experienced both, PE wins every time as you are enabled to think and make decisions on your own two feet.

Complying with the greasy pole of the CS was not for me and they were very tolerant of me during FMD as I actually got things done and changed relative to their standard malaise of constant agreement for fear of retribution and in general they were weak people (lifers we called them) exceptions being some of the vets that were not only good at what they did but also stood up and got counted when change was called for.

I made some very good friends during FMD, mostly Farmers and vets, it was a sad unique situation that is being rerun now with Bluetongue and all the farmers have my utmost sympathy.

Meeting up with a fair few last Saturday at the Kingsbridge Show sans livestock bought back sad memories as we recalled those bad days and they told me of their mixed stories of blue tounge.

You get me totally wrong as a practising old fart - I have no wish for anyone to concur with my ideology or agree with me that is exactly what I rail against I look for people that challenge my ideas and the accepted norms and thus show spirit and display individual thoughts and strengths.

As you say we all have a different stand point and perspective in life shaped partly by our upbringing and open exhausts and powerful engines of aircraft featured highly so it is no wonder that I gravitated to a Morgan Plus 8. The same power to weight, smells and joy of handling are shared values and once I was aware of them in 1971 I knew I had to have one, so bought one unseen or driven from Helen Thorne, trained up from Devon paid cash for it and drove it back home to it's glorious soundtrack and the rest is history.

Coincidently I met the woman who was to become my wife the same year as my Plus 8 yearning some 55 years ago now when she was 16 and both are whole of life wonders for me with nothing else even getting close to deflecting me tbh - some glittery things appear now and again but slight distractions only it seems as with both they are totally honest and frank and not lost to the world of unnecessary electronic gadgetry of the newer generation of cars and womanhood ....

Thank you for your painful honesty and history of that dreadful place in Hamburg of which I had no idea existed.

We spent many happy hours walking around the Alster and enjoying the city and it's beautiful old buildings when we worked out there in Zeven.

The same can be said for Bremen and so many of your reconstructed cities and the Harz on a good winters day takes some beating with the ski jump in action and a gluhwein in your hand watching the brave souls flinging themselves into the ether on nothing but hope,

The same quality that carries us all forward despite or because of our upbringing and exposure to good and bad alike.

I am pleased to say that Heather and I made some lifetime friends in Germany during our time working out there (3 years) and came back with No1 Daughter thanks to the Kreis Krankenhaus who enjoyed dual nationality up until 16 when she had to exercise her choice.

Later when we made our family base in our Devon village ( I continued traveling overseas but Heather was a proper full time Mum to our three as time progressed) we have seen three couples from Germany relocate and settle and are pleased to count them amongst our friends too.

Interestingly of late the same has applied to three young American couples who have relocated to have and grow their families as a direct result of the current regime in their homeland and it's trajectory.


I am thankful that these new generation Germans managed to rid me of the (understandable maybe) hatred and vitriolic that my late Father tainted me with, as you say it has been a long and ultimately rewarding journey.
