Is it surprising. This is my experience.
I no longer own the vehicle I sold it back to a certified MG dealer on 19/6/26 . Having bought it new in Jan 2025.

This was because MG UK couldn't fix a fault that started in Dec 2025 & after 4 months sat in their workshop and 7 attempts to fix it where it always failed within hours I had had enough. That cost me a loss £8,000 plus emotional stress.

The dealer then told a friend I had sold it as I was ill & unable to drive which wasn't the case & that the car was fixed which it wasn't. The dealer apologised saying the sales person was confused.

Here is what the salesman told my friend.

"Just had an interesting conversation with Ollie from ?MG , in ???, where I made an enquiry about your ‘old’car. According to him, you only sold the car as you had to give up driving altogether, due to health reasons. When I asked whether there were any issues with the vehicle, as I thought it priced quite low for the year/mileage etc., he informed me that they would never have a car for sale on their forecourt that had any problems whatsoever."

So that is why I treat anything they say with doubt.

There are exceptions to every rule

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, the only people potentially disadvantaged in this are the owners of the vehicles. I've yet to meet a car sales person who in the first place has perfect knowledge of the vehicle being sold, and if in the highly unlikely event they are, then obliged to voluntarily fully disclose.........in the same way when the dealers are purchasing or taking the vehicle in part exchange, rarely are the then current car owners, totally open as to the faults of the vehicle.they are selling/part exchanging. One in seven drivers (14%) admit to knowingly selling a car with existing mechanical or structural issues to avoid expensive repair bills.

The legal principle is 'buyer beware' known as caveat emptor, places the responsibility on the buyer to inspect and research a property or product before purchasing it. There are certain legislative safequards protecting purchasers, but beyond that it's at your risk/peril..

The purchaser has to do his due diligence...........that's why vehicle outstanding finance/ insurance write off catagories were made public information.........because less reputable seller's couldn't be relied upon to fully disclose.

And still you wonder what the fuss is about - I know John well and I can tell you young man (naive) that he has endured an horrendous journey with this heap of Chinese junk and received abysmal service..

We are all aware of the legal standpoint and what should be done but that is the whole point here - being none of that has been adhered to by the slimy salespeople in their pointy shoes and drainpipes...

It was bought expressly to assist his good lady at the time who was on an operating wait list..

Luckily I can afford the loss. The sad thing is the car itself was excellent. It only had the T box bits to get the long range battery.
I put it down to life experience.
A Porsche sales person told mme the Taycan had the same issue.
I think the car industry is now driven by IT geeks who add more and more not needed systems.

John,sorry to hear the MG issues, I'm a little surprised you couldn't just reject the car as not fit for purpose. . I've rejected 3 new cars and 1 used motorcycle over the years. I find in my experience very few dealers will fight a legal action or threat of it, if the compliant is well framed and documented.

There are civil and criminal consequences to the salesman being economical with the truth, misleading and down right lying, but few pursue them. It is unfortunately a snake oil industry.
