Recordding exhaust notes is somewhat of an art. In a previous life I worked as a programmer and part time music studio engineer for a company making computer games. We were making a racing game, and required 'rally' car engine noise.
I found that capturing this sound on a rolling road, required the mic to be muffled, and in the car footwell for the best sound and no distortion.
Having said that a good microphone is a serious assett in these situations as it will handle dynamics far better than a built in camera mic.
IDeally I could bring a recorder to a meet (when we manage to arrange one we can all get to!) and then we can get side by side comparisons to post on here so others can get an idea before they take the plunge..

Good idea seconded.. we should know what we are purchasing... and it's actual effects. The Cerbera community went through exactly the same process a couple of years back... because there were several independent vendors in the market making different claims.. In the end it took a bench test Rolling Road shootout to get real results that the community could feel confident about what was happening. In the end it came down to: Track Car Solutions in the North and Austec Racing in the south. Most of the other kit providers polarised around these two garages and the community is better for it. Currently we have probably have 3 different OEM exhaust set-ups. and now 4 aftermarket ones? We have ECU mapping from at least 2 different sources. I've heard of but cannot get any actual results from Off the Peg Exhaust headers or race cats And the Induction system is not advetised as a "to-fit" price and not very many people know what that actually is. Same with the quick shift... there are several options but none of them are documented and rated for direct comparison. The list goes on. I'm currently putting togeather the project plan and costings for the "Boss Aero" Project and what i'm finding is that it could fit nicely into a number of stage'd kits that could be produced for certain areas of the car that in theory should be - Price to fit. not Part + fitting + VAT. I have almost got a complete list of suppliers togeather and parts cost.. and when the project goes ahead should be able to form the basis for "to-fit" prices. For now.. we should try to document what we already have... I konw there is the "tech-fix" thread... maybe there should be a upgrade kit comparison section which documents with photo's and sound files (where appropriate) the different options.

Well I am runnign the standard MOrgans Sports pipes (oval ones). My car is putting out exactly 296.6 bhp (as opposed to stock 286 quoted).
No idea what the car was producing before the sports pipes though so it's moot as to whether it has made much of a difference.
Perhaps a rolling road day is the way forward to bring it all together and get some results in a scientific way.
Vixpy1 is someone I know pretty well from PH and he runs a rollign road in surrey at the QinetiQ site in Surrey (close to Chobham Common). Last time I was there the event was well run and there were free butties and tea. Somewhere around 40 quid a car to get tested properly. Could probably manage 8 cars in an afternoon, so if we coudl get the right group together we could learn an awful lot I guess!

Hmmm interesting I wouldn't mind a meet to show off my exhaust shame you could not make it to the TM do, it would have been ideal as most of us will be there I'm not really interested in performance gain as I feel my Aero is more than fast enough for me, from past experience if you change from a std silencer into a straight thro without re-mapping, chances are it will lose both bottom and midrange torque may gain a little topend. As mine wasn't really a straight thro design, I reckon it would remain pretty much the same as before..my 2p I'm however more interested in the sound department, I always thought the sidepipes were nice sounding and characterful, but lacked BASS!!! Ever since the TVR BNG meet at York, virtually every TVR has a sportpipe fitted and basically they drowned out the sound of my Aero, thats when I decided to do something about it Conclusion? Its absolutely fantastic, the new pipes has brought out the best of the V8, its now sounded much more potent, it woofles in a way that only a V8 can, yet it still seem to retained certain amount of flatulent blating sound abeit with much more bass. I would say the sound of my Aero must rank as one of the best this side of American V8, it certainly sounded better than most of the TVR(except 420SE/450SEAC Wedge) which were just loud but didn't sound very special...all IMO of course

As I explained to you on the phone Kin, I did not have exactly the same job done as I was a bit worried about the noise level. I dealt with the fitter Dave, who has had experience of spannering for several race teams, and described to him what I wanted to achieve, that is a reduction in back-pressure combined with a more sonorous note with no flatulence. I also wanted the outlet to look teh same as the OE sidepipe, rather than a rolled pipe. Here are the pictures, taken in haste I'm afraid: As you can see, he has sleeved the outlet in the same way as the original pipe, but the pipe is 2.5 inches compared with the OE pipe with an internal width of 1.5 inches. Externally, they are both the same diameter. The exhaust note is excellent and back-pressure is definitely reduced and there is a real basso profundo depth to the exhaust. At high revs, they measured 101 db's (and this was inside), compared with 108 db's for your system, so it should be all right for many track events. However, Dave has taken the measurements of the tail pipes and if I need less sound for track days, etc, he will send me alternative tips (of 1.5 inches internally) which will considerably reduce the overall noise level. For now, I'm more than happy with the new set-up and just love the enhanced V8 woofle and the reduced back-pressure too, that seems to mean that the engine is more willing to rev. Probably imaginary, but I'm happy. For Cereal, I spoke to Dave about your headers and he said that they can fabricate them exactly how you want them - 4 into 1, 4 into 2 into 1, equal length pipes, etc, and they also have catalysts for racing which he says make an enormous difference. If you phone JP Exhausts and ask for Dave he can discuss more fully with you on what is possible and your own particular requirements.

Hi Brian, I'm pleased you're happy with the pipes as I was quite concerned that the exhaust I recommended is not to your expectations. Therefore you might curse me for wasting your time and money, anyway glad it worked out great The exhaust trim on yours is rolled-in (opposed to rolled-out like mine) which was ordered in last week, because you wanted a more factory look, these are the ones I'm changing to tomorrow. The outlet pipe on mine is actually same as yours at 2.5", but the exhaust trim is 3" I preferred the more fatter look and it filled out the gaps around it nicely I bet you can't wait to take it out again just to listen to the woofle

Wow - looks fantastic!
Getting rather tempted by this now, but don't ahve sidepipes! Anyone know if the factory can ddo a sidepipe conversion on an S1? (or is it likely to be cheaper to by a GTN?)
