I recently did some work to my (admittedly different engine - 2002 Black top Zetec) but I used a K&N filter in standard airbox and redirected the intake to cold air under the car using Silicone Ducting as other suggestion. I listed this on my Le Mans 62 website with a download on the process at this address and may give you some ideas. I must say it has certainly made a significant difference to my car.

In recent test I read (which was well measured with probes etc) so pretty scientific. Came out with the Maxogen coming top.
As you say it's the location which is challenging especially as they are not small..
If you run a windscreen all the time then there is a high density area of air at the base of the windscreen therefore you could tap into this area through a grill at the rear of the engine bay. You may need to fabricate ducting/airbox to seal onto the under-side of the bonnet... alternatively manufacture a duct that taps into the air under the front wheelarch... it obviously needs to be cleaned but it is an area of high pressure.

Funnily enough, this was my very first thought when I started looking at this but I had a couple of very detailed conversations with Andy Jackson at ITG ( and also sent him a load of measurements and photos) and he was very much against anything which lengthened the intake pipe. His big concern was turbulence of the air in the duct itself and for this reason, he was keen to get as short a duct as possible and then mount the Maxogen on the bulkhead As I've said in previous posts, I'm still looking at doing this in conjunction with a new half- bonnet on the passenger side with a SS type airscoop. regards, G

That's a good solution.. I was thinking of putting the wheelarch duct on the side of the engine intake... Which is probably not where Morgan put it  will you seal the rear edge of the bonnet duct to stop air bypassing the intake pipe?

It depends on : (i) whether i can package it in the space available so that the intake pipe sits squarely in the air flow. I've looked at the diffenr models of the maxogen and I think I might be able to do that (ii) also, whether I can find a suitable 'trumpet/ bell end'- even if I have to get one made- to fit on the end of the Maxogen housing Ive sent you a PM re water pumps- any thoughts? regards, G

My air intake on the efi is from a duct in front lh wheel arch There is a fitting there to which the duct is attached and this goes above the exhaust manifold - attached to inner edge of the wing - to filter boc again above manifold/headers. Not the coolest place! I am considering heatshielding the duct/box as a first measure. Second is re-route and shorten the inlet duct. I have got a thermometer that I can tape inside bay and measure temps there - it has a printer attached to record at preset intervals. I may even insert the probe into the air duct etc to try measurements. Don't know when yet but soon hopefully I am interested in measuring air temp at inlet and could then assess changes made. Be patient as I dont know when i will do it! I will provide results wqhen I do though as it could be useful info.

Any one tried a K&N or similar in one of the new 4/4's. (sigma 1.6) Any advice or results would be appreciated. Bob

K&N do replacement filters for the standard ones. I have one on my T16 engined +4. It does help.

Bob, I've not tried K&N but I have fitted the very similar ITG filter element to my 4/4. Hard to say if it makes any real difference but at least airflow will remain consistent and it no doubt all helps with the rest of my mods. Mogsport sourced mine for me and were very helpful.
You could also look at the filter and intake set up that RPM do for the Sigma engine. It reroutes the filter and brings in cooler air from the side louvres which looks interesting. Something I was thinking about if I don't go down the more expensive route of throttle bodies.
