The gearbox of my 1967 4/4 has developed a layshaft noise. As it seems the bearings are past their prime. Could a thicker oil be a (temporary) cure? I hate to take the engine out to get at the gearbox right now.

Having used EP90 in a box where EP80 or 90 was specified, my reaction is no.
My box with EP90 in was slow and difficult for the first 3 miles, whereas with the EP80 it's had since, good changes from the word go.
I doubt it would help the bearings much.

What sort of noise Bodger? Whine or rattle? Are you sure it's the layshaft/laygear? The gear will probably be on needle rollers, and wear can cause a rattle when the gear shuttles back & forth on the shaft, especially if tickover is a bit uneven. You could try a modern transmission oil - here's one example: http://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=66There are other specs but this does mention older Ford boxes and whine.

DaveW, it is the usual rattle which vanishes when you press the clutch in idle. Thanks for the tip, I will follow it up.
