Has anyone here exported a Morgan to Australia purely for resale? My son is living out there at the moment and tells me the prices on good sports cars are very attractive (to the seller!)

Just a thought?

You surprise me. Open topped sports cars are usually more popular in countries like the UK with temperate climates. You dont find them where its really hot - thats what a solid roof and aircon are for.

Hi David
There are some Draconian laws to be observed.
Attached you will find a link to Government website that sets out some of the requirements.
Basically the car has to be manufactured pre January 1989 to be imported unless it is a "private" import(post 1989) for which the car has to be owned overseas for 12 months, plus the importer has to live overseas for the same 12 month period( and believe me they check!!).
Then on top of that, the car has to comply with Australian design rules applicable at the time of manufacture.
Its all about "protecting" the local manufacturers(read GM, Ford Toyota!!!!!!)
But apart from that, an importation can be a viable option, especially with the value of the Aussie $$ at present.
Search "carsales.com.au" plus Morgan Owners Club of Australia to see what local prices are.
Good luck
Ross

Thank you Ross. It'll be an interesting piece of research but I suspect that's where it will stop. I guess if it were relatively straight forward a lot more people would do it - hence the rules as you say.

Thanks again

Don't be completely disillusioned- people have imported cars with great success.
As I said, the main criteria is proof of manufacture before 1 January 1989-(build sheet from the factory will suffice).

Additional items that seem to need to be incorporated (this varies) are scuttle roll bar and door intrusion bars as these were mandatory here pre 1989.Best to get fitted in UK as easier to source there.

However, you are in the best position as you can source/view a car locally which is difficult from this end.

It is fair to say Morgan's are popular in Australia and the client, more so inthe eastern states, is well suited to owning one.

The Morgans on the car sales dot com dot au website and also MOCA are high, and since I started to look from October last year the same cars are still being advertised. Might say something about their price.....

Getting anything in to Australia is difficult with customs and quarrarntine. I even had to have mine quarantine inspeected when it came from NSW to WA. I was half expecting to be given a bag of bits with the wood having been sent off for destruction!
