From Think Automotive

Aeroquip TFE Racing Hose/Aeroquip 666 Aerospace hose/Moquip TFE hose

"Due to its very low ratio of expansion to pressure, this hose has
proved to be ideal for use on flexible lines in competition vehicle
braking and clutch systems providing a desirable “hard” pedal with
re duced travel. It does not conform to existing standards laid down
for normal road vehicles, if subjected to continuous flexing the
stainless steel strands will eventually fracture and could penetrate
the Teflon liner, however this eventuality does not occur within the
normal life of a competition vehicle, this hose in common with all
other components used on such vehicles should be regularly inspected for signs of wear."

Interesting post Jim, when we had our track day car set up by Northampton Motorsport they were totally against the use of Aeroquip hoses for brakes, unless they were treated as a consumable and lifed like a plane part.

Under advice we fitted Teflon hoses, just thought I would mention that as it is quite a serious issue, brakes that is!

I doubt you could buy just "Teflon" hoses as they would not have the required burst pressure, the steel braiding will give the required burst pressure with a safety factor built in. The Aeroquip hoses are Teflon lined to to act as a chemically and permeation resistant liner and to allow some flexibility. Teflon is a Trade name of DuPont. The TFE mentioned in the Aeroquip hoses denotes the liner is made from (Poly)Tetra Fluoro Ethylene, the chemical name for Teflon. There are much better polymer liners than Teflon from a bust pressure perspective but they tend to be too stiff for a brake hose.
