Try to avoid using silicone on your car, if you need a respray in the future that could cause you a lot of problem Even tiny parts of silicone dust can cause fish eyes in the new paint. Professional resprayers (or what ever they are called) are "not that keen" in getting silicone contaminated vehicles into their shops... But it is a great material

Good point, but I I believe that to be true of silicone spray, but solid silicone adhesive applied to an area to be re-covered by bonnet tape after a re-spray should not be an issue i would have thought? The thinking behind using silicone was to avoid banging through yet another run of tacks. As my scuttle is mild steel, not stainless it seemed sensible to avoid another source of corrosion. Unable to hit the same holes through the thick tape was another decider.

Just about to replace mine. No tacks or rivets used in manufacture and I shall be using an upholstery glue I think originally called Cow Gum, there is probably a Bostick equivalant. Full of petroleum fumes, you coat both parts, allow to almost dry and then join together. Very strong and invisible, smells fantastic, the factory used to use something similar for sealing the flexible rear window. I'm also thinking of putting anti-squeak tape on the opposing bonnet edge to see if that removes the requirement for vaseline lubes. (NO comment)
