We're probably a bit off subject here but this has long been one of my favourites and is well worth a look, I love the ingenuity. I hope the link works.

If you like that sort of thing google Doxford, I cut my teeth on those, the first ones I worked with were built 1948 and when they were running I could stand and watch them for hours, eeee lad, they don't make em like that any more!

my uncle worked at the Doxford engineering yard (Pallion Sunderland) for 40 years, as a Fitter & Turner, once on a visit to the Yard as a child i was placed in a Piston that was stud upside down, around about 8yrs old i guess i would be 3-4ft and could just say see over the top of what would of been the bottom edge. one of my finest memories of living in this out back area, is watching the ships been launched, especially as my Grandad was the name Painter on the sides of the Vessels, but took over/time when the Launches were on, we got ring side standing as it were. There are some interesting clips on Youtube of the Doxford factory. I expect your uncle was there when the engines I worked on were built. There were of course two pistons per cylinder like that, the motion of the cooling water dipper pipes for the upper pistons when flat out (110rpm) was mesmerising.

"Happy" Hertford, NZSC0. Somewhere around 1972 I had my 19th birthday on there, then a few years later I took the Otaio to Brest to hand over to the new Greek owners.
Swing that lamp!
