Okay gang, we all have them - songs that create perfect moments in time. Either they have sentimental value and bring you back there as soon as the song starts or they are songs we rely on when we are in certain moods: to get us ready for a party, to cheer us up, to mellow us out, etc! Whatever the case may be, I'll kick things off: -

For Long Drives - Mew's album Frengers and in particular Comforting Sounds, Snow Brigade and She Came Home for Christmas .

Sunday Morning, sipping coffee, looking at the dawn rising and enjoying the quietness of the world - Ray LaMontagne's Til the Sun Turns Black and in particular Empty and pretty much anything by Sarah McLachlan but if I had to pick one, Answer from Afterglow

I could go on and on but I'll pass the ball over...

Well, certainly have some strong memories

Spem in Alium - Thomas Tallis (circa 1570)
First heard this on a car radio, and had to pull over to listen to it properly. Starts so slowly and gently, builds up and then takes off like an Aero with a huge surge part way through. Definitely a ‘phone of the hook’ one.

Bob Marley
Driving through the deserted and just rained on streets of London after a gig, listening to a Bob Marley. The perfect sound to be relaxed, but not soporific, and it just seemed to go with the setting.

Music Session in Stroud
Quite a few years back, the Stroud Morris side had a huge number of brilliant fiddle players (may still do, but have rather lost touch), all in the ‘English’ tradition. A group of us had come up from Kent to join in, and it was just one of those times where all the players were on form, and there were no bodhran owners there to spoil it. A truly stunning evening.

Incantation
I used to commute to Bromley (County Court), in the days before you could cover a lot of the distance on the M25. Having slogged out in the evening, the relief at picking up the A21 coincided with the track that starts gently and builds right up (? Katchapya ?). Good job there were not any ‘speed’ cameras (aka money boxes) there!

Its hard for me to name all the songs which would creat perfect moments. But one song which immediately sprang to mind is Lovely Day by Bill Withers (That song always seems to chill me out), on one Sunday morning, I decided to go for a breaskfast run over in the Lake district(4am), I had that song on repeat play on the cd player

I had to stop listening to Rammstein in the TVR as the combination of fantastic hype-music and high BHP was frightening.

It's like the devil on your shoulder

I can relate to Simon's choice of Ray la Montagne, but I'm also afflicted by a liking for 'Jethro Tull'. If a favourite choice in music is determined by how many copies of the same Album -original recording - I possess, it has to be 'Auvergne Chants' by Elysium - not the German Heavy Rock Band of the same name, I might add.

It is a modern interpretation by a group of female 'Session' singers of the original 'Chants d'Auvergne/Songs of the Auvergne' by Canteloube. Unfortunately, the Elysium recording has now been 'Deleted' by the record company. It has everything in it from Joy to Sadness. And can be appreciated at any time.

In a similar vein are the band ERA (sometime referred to as Eric Levi as it is his project).

There are so many favorites, it's so hard to pick... That's why I prefer to always keep *all* of my music with me in the car (it's about 1600 CD's worth of it by now). My car player is the good old empeg, with 2 x 120G hard disks.

I had an iPod link in my Aero (and my LR) and agree, it is the only real option if you love music (and hate the drivel on the radio!).

Can't wait until more car makers add Media Card options to their stereos. Surely this, or a removable HD, has to be the way to go!
