Morgan 1986 4/4 4 seater
Wonder if anyone can help, I am being bugged by a squeaking like metal on metal noise from the front near side, this happens mainly over bumps large or small (never thought I would be looking for bumps to diagnose a fault) and when cornering.
I believe it is coming from the front end.
I have
Stripped suspension
cleaned
reassembled with new damper blade.
pins are less than 8k old + bushes and springs
Re-greased etc.
I have regular shocks at the front (swapped them left for right) no difference.
Break reaction bars.
AVO at the back (rear shock conversion)
Checked all the couplings at the back greased etc.
Still get the squeaking.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks all

My first Morgan was a 1985 4/4 4 seater and I used to get a metal on metal noise over large bumps. Turned out to be (the fan on) the alternator catching on the inner wing!

My Car did this for a while (as many may remember from the inaugural gaydon autosolo). It turned out to be the alternator rubbing slightly when cornering (mainly did it when turning right) cured by fitting a slightly shorter belt

Thank you guys, I will have a look soon. I concur mainly on when turning right.
I will report back as and when.
The hours I have spent for a possible belt?

Have you checked all your wing to inner valance bolts are nice and tight? also the cowl, bonnet fittings. It might possibly be bits of bodywork moving against each other.

Another area to check would be the wooden rocker panels under the doors, if any of the woodwork is shot then its possible the body tub is creaking as it flexes.

This will sound daft, however, update on type of noise its an eek eek eek rapidly together, the amount of eek’s depends on the bumps (I visions of you now trying it)!
I can not replicate the noise on the car whilst standing; bumping her up, down, left, right or shaking the engine to and fro.
That alternator is very close to the inner wing mind, so will check that.

Many thanks

Blimey wood!
Would I need to drop the rear part of the wing to check that or would pulling up the trim below the door suffice?
Thought it may have been the exhaust coupling at the four branch manifold as it pretty rigid along there. I was going to whip it off and try.

That does sound exactly like my cars symptoms. It made a hell of a racket at the autosolo. sounded a bit like a parrot, I thought...

Might be worth checking the clamp bracket that joins the upper and lower crossframe to the bumper[Just behind the front edge of the front wing].They are made of an alloy and corrode and split on the very thin section by the clamp bolt, although the bolt remains tight.I replaced mine on my 78 4/4 with a couple i made in steel.
Good luck Barry
