Though my car is 2003 it has a 3 letter, 3 digit number-plate.
So I have a set of black and silver plates, purely because I prefer the look.
I drove out to the local Halfords (about 2 miles) to buy some copper-slip; arrived at the carpark and was followed in by local plod in a Ford Focus.
He parked beside me, got out of his car and started to admire my 4/4.
After a few minutes chat, he came out with
"You know that you are displaying illegal number plates? Black and silver are only allowed on cars pre-1973. I'm not going to do anything, but I suggest you change them, as some of my colleagues may decide to book you for the offence. Oh and the fine could be upto £1000"
Fair enough; plates changed back already and it was all said in a really friendly manner.

A friend of mine didn't heed his initial friendly warning about a black plate on his bike. A few weeks later he got pulled again by the same cop, collecting himself a fixed penalty and had to go and show plate changed.
If they tell you once, they will be looking out for you again.

You need the old James Bond Aston Martin DB5 rotating number plate!
Serioulsy I never understood why you would give you the added safety of the reflective plate for the black & white one.
Must be the VP Ops in me & behavioural safety training (note to self same applies to speed limits).

From everything I've read on this its a FPN and £60 fine, and a visit to an MOT test centre to show you've changed the plates.

I spent 4 years in Germany & like to break a rule day just to ensure they didn't get into my brain (sorry North Germans). My KPI currently 75% for 2012 but not on safety rules where I want 100%. I am a sad git there as I have 800 folks at risk where I work and must lead by example. My nightmare is telling someone how their beloved died. Graham & Frank 4 x 4 will point out though I get from A to B a bit qucick often. But for me to be me being seen seems obvious, I understand where you are coming from but having seen some fools on the road anything that helps I'll use to ensure I live. __________ 2003 - 4/4

If you ever come up behind an old car on the M way in the dark,or poor visibility, the rear lights can be pitiful. If you break down on the M way, or a dark lane and can't keep the lights on, all you've got without reflective plates is the two small reflectors. It's risky enough on the hard shoulder as it is. Reflective plates add a significant extra area of reflected light, and I would not fit black & silver plates for that reason alone. It's a reason to get stopped, and it's a reason for your insurance company to argue the toss. End of sermon!

If you ever get caught in that situation, I wish you well becuase chastismeent and a bowed head will be the least of your problems Neuro/orthopaedic or trauma surgery after you have been hit by a lorry ( perhaps driven by a European driver near or over his tacho limit) focusses the mind extremely well.Sorry if that sounds melodramatic but it happened to a friend of mine driving an MGB ( despite reflective number plates!) G
