Isn't a key element in paying attention to the road ahead the decision which gear to select?
Saves all that tension involved in the auto deciding after the event...?
Nick, I suspect from a very basic point of view, the primary function is to navigate a box on a road system with other boxes on it while trying not to come into contact with any of them, and the fewer decisions you require to make inside the box to carry out that task effectively the more brain power you have available to concentrate on anything happening outside the box which the box controller may not be programmed to expect....?
I suppose with even less requirement of the "driver" to pay attention could risk inducing sleep...!!!
Despite all the above, and my petrolhead upbringing, at this time in my life, of the three cars I have available, the Tesla would be the last to go in any requirement to downsize.
