Level 42 used to do Guildford as their first gig before a tour and I got to setup the PA before the concert. I had not really heard them before but watching them setup changed things for me. When Mark King played the bass it was wow. I have followed them ever since, great band, especially live.
The music of that period was all a bit bland and could have been constructed on a BBC B (early 8 bit home computer for those..) this stood out for me. Having said that I do wish they had removed Mike Lindups mic so he could not whistle over the tracks.
