I had the 72 hour heart monitor attached last week, and so managed without a shower for two days. I returned it a week last Sunday afternoon, and on the following Tuesday afternoon, had a phone call from the hospital, that it revealed an element of Atrial Fibrillation, which is now seen as the cause of my TIA. I don't really have any symptoms , other than sometimes an awareness of beats in bed.
They asked me to get back into hospital so I could get a different anti blood clotter, which is now Apixoban, 5mg every 12 hours, which replaces the Clopidogrel.
The Consultant was on holiday but must monitor his e-mail because he contacted the ward Registrar to get me in the change prescription asap. I mean, this is NHS at its best.
A friend who is also over 70 is having a different experience. He has been getting regular Atrial Fibrillation which has occasionally got him out of bed. His GP arranged a heart monitor but only 24 hours, and then its a six to nine month wait to see a specialist. In the meantime he gets Beta Blockers, which may control the AF, but the GP is not addressing the risk of a TIA or stroke. There is no connect.
