Surely switching the heating on would make the engine run even cooler!
The bad air filter position seems to be a common problem so I would not return for a test until it has been inspected and/or renewed.

I suspect they meant heater fan and screen heat. This would load the alternator and hence engine, particularly at idle. Better still would be turning on aircon of course.
