I completely disagree with you, I had great fun with my MX5. It's what the British should have built.

This is exactly the point of driving for pleasure in my view. You need to be able to feel the car as it nears the limit, understand how the tyres move, what the steering inputs do, and so on.

Sure, you can do this in a high performance car, but you need to pay for an expensive closed track with extensive runoffs, and if you get it wrong you are looking at even more expensive repairs. On the other hand, larking about on a deserted B road in a car that has a much smaller performance envelope is not only free, but even if you do get it wrong you'll be sliding into the hedge at 40mph rather than 140mph.

For the rest of it, which usually involves just getting from A to B with the least grief, is actually more enjoyable in a lower performance car as you don't have to be constantly fighting the urge to go faster. My 4/4 on a motorway is perfectly happy up to 85 and can sit at 70 all day, but there's no risk of me absent-mindedly pressing a bit too much on the throttle and getting nicked for 90mph +

There's no such thing as a cheap porsche.
A simple widget, if it was for a ford etc etc, would cost £1, for a Porsche it's £20.....and you'll need 6 of them........+ the fitting kit, new gaskets etc etc..! You'll have to drop the engine out.....and while you've got it out you might as well do..................

Before you know it, with labour and vat, a simple job has cost £3000...!
If you need body work, kidney bowls etc, on air cooled cars you're looking at considerable expense......🤷🏻‍♂️😱

I reallyh enjoy the tinkering I do with my MG and Morgan - it's a nice release from all the stresses and strains of life (even when it doesn't go to plan). For me, it's part of the joy of owning a car, and one of the reasons I've got a classic for a daily driver too.

I've only driven a Porsche once - a Carrera 4S. I'd been driving a raggy old S3 Landy for a few years previously and the Porsche was amazing. Within minutes I was driving fast but safely. Everything was 'right' - handling, steering, speed etc. And that's why I'd never have one. Where is the fun in driving something that does everything perfectly? I much prefer ragging round in my old two, pushing the limits, surprising muself and others when I hustle them round corners, listening out for every squeak, bump and clunk and adapting to all feedback the car is giving you. For me, the Posrche was just a bit 'beige', and after a few weeks I'd probably be bored with it.

Howard, whilst I understand your sentiments I would suggest a 911 for that kind of money, may leave an awful lot to be desired.
