Good news for Traditional Morgan owners!

Gomog was created to help preserve the knowledge necessary to keep our traditional cars on the road. But without the proper parts at proper prices this knowledge is only a partial solution. Half the private inquiries I receive daily now concern where to find some component that is no longer easily available or unknown. I have become appalled at the predatory pricing that is common in the vintage car world now and the lack of knowledge of what suits what car or model or time period or country.

The old knowledge and the legendary stalwarts are still around, albeit quiet and/or quiet. We correspond constantly. We trade old yarns and new trad ideas for fun. I have also been gathering new suppliers of old parts for years. I have had many ideas but I find I myself too old now for projects that grand. The following shows the most promise and is, at this juncture, the best solution.

To whit:

An exchange I had with the new Morgan executive some months ago found kindred spirits on Pickersleigh along with an old and trusted friend. The last MMC regime had largely ended the wonderful retail supply of non-current parts in the 2000s. But the present initiative is to revive that and make it a pillar, a beacon, for British heritage cars in a way I hope gomog would be decades ago.

We have progressed to the point where I have been asked to announce the birth of HERITAGE PARTS, (their chosen name, not mine) a new and separate division of the Morgan Motor Company. It shall be under the direct supervision of Mark Evans, MMC Parts Manager. He will be fed sources for the trad parts we need. I have also have the legendary designers who can improve upon those parts and offer them again. Quiet retirement does not mean brain dead. laugh2 We are at the humble beginnings stage, but there is a ton of good will and hopes. It will be an avenue for us oldies, newbies and the marque to pass on what we know and where to find it. Everyone can help out..with parts they know of, preferably original sources but substitutes can be acceptable if reasonably priced originals are no longer available or are found wanting.

That’s a brilliant idea but key will be fair and reasonable pricing. Current issue if that the factory markup on part is so excessive we have to track them down elsewhere, a good example is wheel cylinders or brake pads

It might suit some but why do we need a middle man with a reputation for high mark ups . Surely if the source of many spares for trads is already known why spoon feed this valued info to MMC when we have the opportunity to buy direct ourselves.

Due to my 'settings' I couldn't read the original post, but it seems that MMC are trying to become a Melvyn!

My experience with most Morgan parts is that the mark up is ridiculous and 95% of the time I rely on forum knowledge as to the original source/manufacturer of the part and then buy it from an alternative supplier for a fraction of the price, or modify something similar to suit.

I shall keep on supporting my usual loyal suppliers not some vanity project for a consortium of retired folks, after all we owe allegiance to the likes of Cain and the numerous others that are always there and earning a living by it, Melvyn being the fall back I have yet to use..

It was the previous MMC management, latterly under the stewardship of Steve Morris, that stopped supporting the older models. One of many things they did rather badly.

The new owners/management have reversed that policy. Given that it's increasingly difficult to find suppliers/expertise surely having a commitment from the factory is a positive ?

Well, I think overall its a positive, as long as the MMC work alongside other stockists and do not force them out.. and keep prices at a reasonable level..

I wish MMC would give owners of CX cars a break as well and at least make available parts listings/diagrams. As a CX gen car owner I have zero in the way of info available, other than try to go through a main dealer...

I do agree that it shows a renewed commitment to Morgan owners that may have appeared lacking in recent years. However, much like the new CX range, I don't think I fit their financial demographic.....

Agreed..but that could be a blessing. This Heritage Parts will be run automonously.

Had they started up a support network of parts for the Aero chassis and parts supply for the M3W + SS engines it would have been a true service to the dedicated owners of these cars as all I am hearing is that MMC is sadly lacking in both areas.

The owners of Trads that do their own maintenance and repairs already know the helpful and cost effective suppliers of parts, anyone that doesn't only has to ask on our Forum to get the right answer.

I'm unlikely to swap my usual suppliers of stuff, unless MMC come in MUCH cheaper (for the same quality). They've served me well over my ownership and I have a certain loyalty to those that give me good service.

As Hamwich mentioned, I'm one of the 'flat cappers', do 98% of work myself and don't care about originality or using 'factory' parts. The only time I've used a main dealer was when my car was under warranty and still ended up fixing the problem myself when they couldn't.
