"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well." Baron Pierre de Coubertin. OK this was said by a Frenchman or maybe a Belge and they do even less "winning" than we do. BUt it is the spirit of the playing fields of Maro Itoje's old school.

As an Englishman who has lived half his life in Wales, and even joined a Welsh Male Voice Choir, I have the great joy of being able to swap team loyalties according to who is doing the better job. Mind you Yma o Hyd is a much better song that Swing Low!

Love the Guinness irony……Was in Tarvisio, Italy yesterday to try to watch the game with France. Impossible to get any bar owners to
turn off football and the final stages of the Olympics. Really not popular round here, although we met one guy who said he enjoys , drives a Mini Cooper, wants a Mark 2 jJag and loves all old English sports cars ( including you know what!).
My sons first rugby tour was back in 2010 to Rome and we have another U13 or 14s going there at the end of March. Treviso has been another place we have played. In truth I thought it would have gained more traction in 20 years. Perhaps as Italy play better, interest might follow.

Sitting in a tee shirt in the sun, such a change from the endless winters rain…..any bets on a drought and hosepipe ban in August / September ?
MM
PS Going to order Campari spritz now ……..it would be rude not to.

I just read Stephen Jones in The Times online. There are over 900 comments - the first page of those is summed up well by just one of them - “An appalling review of a brilliant game.”

The brother in law in NZ normally 'whatsapp' for the Irish games, even though its 3 am there at kick off, however Liverpool were playing so we knew his loyalties would be split as he is a big Liverpool fan. We caught the last frantic 20 minutes or so of the Plymouth game. Well done Plymouth as Liverpool have a tremendous in the last 15 minutes scoring record. The brother must still be sulking as he hasn't responded to nudges to chat.

The Scottish game was very disappointing and predictable and I started to switch off watching in the later half of the game.

Agreed, John - some of the Leinster guys seem somewhat tired -its said that they are over trained and therefore stale! the Ulster guys played out of their skins and McCloskey's chase and tackle on Marcus Smith was just fantastic

Winter series sailing tomorrow then find a comfy spot to watch the All Blacks play Ireland, should be fun after Ireland gave them a fright last time and we have a new team together. Sad to see England retreat a bit after scoring a goal yesterday allowing Argentina to take flight.
