I just purchased a stainless set from Librands for my Roadster. I could have bought a spray bomb for a couple dollars and refinished the pitted examples on the car, but hey, you only go around once!

The chrome section of the mirror is called Mazak which is a zinc /aluminium alloy, chrome tends to be on these cheap castings to suffer from porosity when water passes through the chrome plating and becomes trapped you get a little battery formed the furring action results in the little bumps you see. There are Two ways to prepare the base metal for rechroming 1) after stripping the old chrome drill out each little pit & fill with solder then polish back or 2) polish back the base mazak to below the pitting - doing this might break through the thin sections of the casting.

The best way to prevent pitting is to wax your chrome every time you wax your car this will seal the chrome and never ever use metal polish on chrome you will eventually kill it.

I recently sent away some aluminium door trims and an over rider off my Alvis for rechroming to a place called Unique Plating in Birmingham , I’m waiting for them being returned so can’t comment on the finish at this time but for each o the door trims (approx. 20mm x 1 m) they are charging £20 & £30 for the bumper over rider + vat + Postage .
