Before you strip the mirror, have you checked whether the base can be successfully rechromed?
The mirror bases which I have are made of some kind of Mazak/zinc based alloy and several platers have advised me that they cannot be replated successfully.
I did get a price from a firm of platers which made the costs of a new pair of stainless steel mirror bases from Librands look quite reasonable!

Corrosion seems to come from the cast alloy maybe because the chrome finish is a little porous. I had my bases powder coated black some while ago which seems to have cured the issue. No need to disassemble as the coaters wedged open the flex part so paint went into the gap. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/9HIVTtJ.jpg)

Thanks Arwyn and Richard .I was looking at either re-chroming or painting the bases but have bit the bullet and ordered a stainless set from Librands. I would still like to know how to remove the base spring so to take it apart.

Wise move Dinko and probably cheaper than getting the old one re finished! You'll only have to wash the new ones!

You won't regret it - the Librands items are good quality and look a lot better than the old ones.
Once you get the old ones off, you should see how to remove the base spring. I haven't tried on my old set - I value my fingers too much!

Librands stainless £195 Powder coating OE including prep. £45 Does refinishing mean rechroming or powder coating here? Just sent off two motorcycle handle bar levers and a gear change lever to the chrome's....£450 estimate. Sent a BSA Gold Star tank off for chroming....£750. Arwyn

The stainless mirror bases are exquisite I have to say. Mine were from HOE, but it's likely that the Librands are similar or the same. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2017/09/11/IMG_4960.jpg)

Yes, Chrome plating is ridiculously expensive. Unless you are having to do this for authentic refurbishment its far better to look for an alternative solution. These plating companies are ripping the likes of us off for these small items that they just add onto a dip full of many customer parts. Watch the likes of Wheeler dealers when they tell mike how much it'll cost and he replies "That's very reasonable for two bumpers and a grill, £200 I'm having some of that"! Yeh! it's not what we get charged mate!
Powder coating is really only painting and without the prep that a normal paint finish would entail...... it covers a multitude of sins but is no more durable than a paint finish, worse in fact if the surface integrity is damaged. Who wouldn't agree that Dinko made exactly the right choice for a recent MOG? In my opinion its the choice id make every time!
