I have been known to use a variety of methods to remove a reluctant oil filter dependant on the access available... even using a hammer and screwdriver to dig into the edge of the rim and tap it in the appropriate direction with the blade of the screwdriver digging in to the harder metal of the rim of the filter providing grip enough accompanied with the shock of the hammer taps causing the filter to release it`s initial grip..
It is best to only ever hand tighten oil filters for as you have found out it can create issues when it comes to removing them..
I have a variety of tools for the task even one exactly like the one Richard posted though access will determine that which is best for whichever car you are working on...
