Replacing the plastic steering column cover
Since I took possession of my 2011 4/4, I have been agonising over what to do about the ugly plastic cover sitting behind my mota lita steering wheel and covering up the beautiful steering column. .
Option A Do nothing Not acceptable
Option B Cover the offending item with matching leather No point as the steering column is still covered and one now has an ugly leather covered plastic cover
Option C Try and purchase the Allon White solution in kit form and install myself Not cheap and dont much like the way it is finished
Option D Buy the MK German solution Very expensive and draws attention to itself rather than the steering column
Option E Make my own solution
I've had a go at this, see photos attached (I hope). I cut back the plastic cowl and covered the remaining part in leather (did all this while insitu); then made two timber inserts for either side of steering column, covered them in leather and inserted using matching screws to rest of the car.
Its not perfect but I'm happy with the result. Cost was $10 for contact adhesive and a contact got me the matching Muirhead leather FOC,the thin padding was found on a builders skip. took a lot of time to plan and execute prob 25 hors

Super job Jeff. My cowl occasionally touches on something and makes a rubbing sound. That looks like a brilliant fix.

I have the leather covered original, and yes, I agree it is not really the answer. I have been thinking of making a new shape in fiberglass and covering it in leather. It is surprising someone has not already done it.

I too have reluctantly specced the leather covered cowl on my new 4 seater, however I just spotted in the latest edition of MOG magazine the report on the Geneva show says "neater steering column trim" is going to be introduced on new cars. Don't quite know what they mean by this, hopefully the hideous plastic monstrosity they have been fitting is relegated to the bin. I've asked Williams to confirm whether mine will be to the new standard...
