Anti-tramp bar modification
Hi, I got my car back. Maybe you followed the discussion at eMog. My dealer made a modification. It looks a bit "home made" but I have a good feeling about it.

Looks pretty good Ivo. If those welds don't hold nothing will!

Definitely looks like a strong repair. It should provide you with trouble free motoring.

Theres a lot of weld there but it hasn't penetrated very well, what is it supposed to do ? The bolt snaps right at the block, which is attached with longer U-bolts, under the spring. I guess, it snaps, because there is a lever effect on the bolt. With this modification, there is a distribution of the force, and no longer a lever effect.

Theres a lot of weld there but it hasn't penetrated very well, what is it supposed to do ? Good question Jim! These botches have been used since the dawn of Morgan pre-history,; they didn't work then and they don't work now! Ivo will end up busting something else, at best a U-bolt, at worst a spring, probably accompanied by exploring the Mog's off-road capability! I'll say this only once, duh. The point at which the U-bolt end of this contraption is attached does NOT move in an arc of which the other end is supposed to be the front mounting. That's why the concave spring has shackles, or trunnions in the early cars. This device merely relies on the rubber joints so something will break, sooner or later. In this case the welding looks so cr*p that it will probably soon fall off anyway. Only an A-frame or better, the CMR leading link works, period.

Those are clear words, thank you Mogburner. Unfortunately, I got many opinions, from many people. They all are within the range of "all thumbs up" and "all thumbs down". Even more unfortunately, I'm not in the position to judge. And of course I don't want to test my Moggie's off-road capabilities... I have now addressed my issue to Mr. Baldwin, Service Warranty Manager at MMC, in hope to get his point of view. All the best, Ivo

Hi Mogburner, I am pretty new to Morgans, probably this is all been talked about, but I have been wondering about the AT-bar. As you say, because of arc that the axle end has to move in, it must always be pushing or pulling on the axle while the suspension is working. I dont have any real measurements here but if you take AT-bar of 62cm (the ruler I have on my desk) and supension travel of 12cm there is already 10mm lateral movement. If that causes Ivo's AT-bar to snap, should'nt they all snap? Or at least all the newer cars with the more supple suspension? And if the axle is pushed back and forth, should'nt you at least fit one eather side to keep the axle straight? Just curious in case I ever upgrade from the plus-4. JT

Please let me point out, that this is an original design by Morgan.
All, including the point where it's attached. This attachment point remained unchanged, with the reinforcement that my dealer did.

Ivo, I realise the (single)TB is standard on the roadster. But I also noticed that you broke the original twice. That is why I asked the questions. I dont know if a single or double TB was standard on the plus-8's and if they suffered the same problems? Maybe less if (as I am told) they have a lot stiffer rear suspension. Regards, JT
