A lot more cleaning

Had LLR up on stands again today. Time to clean exhausts. The cats (there you are Jays you do get cats in this site) had a bit of surface corrosion, I presume due to heat and water combo, even though they are stainless. So copious amount of rubbing down and then a polish. I think when I have more time I may remove them mask up and paint with Silver VHT paint. Both sides only took 4 hours together.

Been reading this and holding back . In the concours world a top coat shine will not do , the sheen must be built up , firstly with a paste polisher which contains an extremly mild abrasive followed by several coats of wax polish . To produce the effect that the shine appears to be coming from the depths of the paint. Even better results can be obtained sprinkle a very small amount of corn starch over the body work and rub the bodywork again .

Hi Jack, I don't think concours is quite my bag, at the moment I find it a bit extreme, and I do not really have enough spare time to prepare the car. Also I enjoy driving it too much. It's more about keeping it clean and tidy for me, using and then cleaning up after. Maybe when I have more time I might have a go.

Adrian,

smart job... but I agree with you about "concourse": life is too short.

In my book everything needs to be clean to prevent corrosion or other damage, but otherwise no need to take it to a standard that is better than new.

One question, what is that part between the cat and the exhaust? On Tarka the cat seems much closer to the engine, half way through the inner wing, so one end is clearly visible when the bonnet is opened.

Peter

Tarka's cat was pawing my roof on Saturday! I should have given him a polishing cloth I guess?

Cats Adrian? You not confusing me with Neil by any chance?

Peter, I think you are referring to the flexible extension behind the cat?

JLT....I hope you are not trying to get Adrian to wax his exhaust? scared innocent

Good work Adrian but 4 hours on the cats, now that's what I call dedication.

Yes I meant NeilM, you are easily confused, innocent, the bit between cats and silencer is stainless flexi pipe.

I have used a chrome wax on the everything from the flexi hose back. I used Belgums, and don't laugh it works and means that if they get dirty you can just wash them off and wipe dry, and they are good like that for at least 3 months.

The cats on the Aero, were designed and made by an exhaust company at Cullumpton, can't think of their name, they merged with Top Gear exhausts last year. Not sure if they still make exhausts for Morgan. The cats on the Aero got so hot originally that they blistered the wings, so the design is, if I remeber correctly, effectively the cat inside 2 other pipes with insulation inbetween the outer 2. The designer showed me how they wer made.
