Morgan Aero SuperSports Photos
Morgan Aero SuperSports
Throughout 2009 the Morgan Motor Company is celebrating one hundred years of continuous manufacture of motorcars. The company has remained in one family’s ownership since the founder HFS Morgan made his first car in 1909.
As part of the Centenary celebrations Morgan announces a truly special model.
Designed and engineered in house, the Morgan Aero SuperSports is a lightweight aluminium sports car with a luxurious specification. The interior features a comfortable combination of polished hardwoods, hand stitched leather and electronic technology to create a driving environment that is efficient, ergonomic and sumptuous. In spite of all this opulence the overall weight of the car is still minimal so the car is responsive to driver inputs and economical to run. The unique way Morgan can achieve this is down to our use of aircraft style superformed aluminium outer panels and the skills of our craftsmen to hand finish the assembly of each car.
This technology debuted in the 100 AeroMax coupes built by the factory in 2008 and 2009.
Such was demand for this model, that Morgan have taken the decision to produce the Morgan Aero SuperSports. A limited edition, the car makes use of two aluminium detachable roof panels. These can either turn the car effectively in to a coupe or when detached bring fresh air and the aromas of the seasons to the driving experience without undue wind disturbance to spoil the journey. The panels can be stored conveniently in the boot.
The car of course benefits from the lightweight aluminium Aero chassis which is adhesively bonded for class leading rigidity. Exceeding global crash protection standards, this is also the platform used by the Morgan Aero Eight GT3 currently competing successfully in the 2009 International FIA GT3 Championship. This chassis combined with the aluminium 4.8 litre BMW V8 engine and a choice of 6 speed automatic or manual gearboxes offers an unrivalled driving experience. No other automatic car offers such dynamic power transmission.
Drawn by Matthew Humphries, and engineered for production by the experienced “Morgan Design” team, the new Aero Super Sports is due to enter production in early 2010. A deposit of £25,000 is required to ensure the supply of one of these exciting new models. It is anticipated to cost around £127,000 including VAT.
Charles Morgan, Grandson of the founder said “ The Morgan Aero SuperSports is a luxurious flamboyant sports car which also remains true to Morgan’s philosophy of lightweight minimalist simplicity. It is a celebration of our love of cars and the romance of travel and is a fitting model to announce during Morgan’s Centenary year.”

Julf - a 'new build' MGB is nowhere near as good as a recent trad Mog. I say that having lived with MGB's since 1980 continuously. The B gets better with lightweight front crossmember plus double wishbones, and IRS with coilovers at the rear. But if you spend all that, and uprate the brakes it will cost well over £30k and depreciate like a stone. The standard car isn't really quick enough either, so a V8 is essential. The Mog Roadster is so much better than my GTV8, sad though that is to say.

I'm sure those aren't Project Kahn Alloys (well actually not sure at all but would be surprised if they were sourced there) and I think they suit the car tremendously. And as for Weisman, come on Kin a plastic ugly car (albeit with a great engine and I'm sure Germanic quality). The Max/SS/8 interior is also far nicer than the Weismans. All IMHO of course I'm 99% sure they're Kahn wheels,I had those wheels on my Audi A8, agreed it does suit it, but if they're going to charge £127k, Kahn wheels should be out!! I do like Weisman, but a £100k price tag for a car made out of GRP seem very expensive. However..compare to the new Aero SS, it suddenly becomes very attractive now(not that I could afford either ) ... 60k extra is a lot of money for design and product profitability.... but correct and the right long term decision.
Agreed, I guess they could make more profit selling 50 SS than making 100 Aero8s

Well, it is beautiful. On balance, I like it more than the standard Aero. But I still prefer the Aeromax. I think there simply has to be some major changes if the car is to justify the massive leap in cost. Specifically, in my humble opinion: 1. The so-obviously Mini Cooper headlights are simply unacceptable in a £130k car. 2. The Switch gear has to change too - the plastic light and wiper stalks are a travesty - even Leven were knocking out alloy items for TVR's for a few hundred quid a few years back. The new Aero simply must have better detailing to survive and compete at this price level - that means the stalks, generic steering wheel, stereo , switches - they all have to go. 3. The wheels look cheap and too generic. Again, they'll have to be replaced by a bespoke design. 4. The interior in general is just a lift out of the Aero - not good enough, lets hope it changes. Still no glovebox for example to stash your Persol sunglasses , when it is apparent from this forum that our friends in the Netherlands have home-built a much more elegant solution themselves, so there is no reason Morgan cannot do it. Not being deliberately negative - after all, any Aero is already a significantly more attractive and intriguing object over practically any sports car out there, but at this price level I think there is clear room for improvement. The Supersports is so close to being achingly, longingly gorgeous it hurts. But for me, the detailing is not right yet so it misses the mark. Of course I have'nt seen it in person yet as it where, but the pics suggest that development work is still needed in my opinion.

But I still prefer the Aeromax. but this would get me out of both my Max and my Roadster, if only it had the new M3 engine AND flipper-gearbox http://www.pistonheads.com/pics/news/19800/tn_6-L.jpg

Stonking looks overall. Not liking the rims. Hard to choose wheels for the design as it is contemporary with a mix of traditional cues.

One suggestion - I don't like the exterior door handles and I don't know why they are so low down. Maybe they could have some lovely little alloy handle near the top surface of the door? Looks lovelier every time i see it, on balance...

It's probably a bit pedantic considering the overall wonderful design and I know even radios are pretty useless in classic Morgans but ---- I thought I'd see a decent Satnav installed in the dash.

I thought I'd see a decent Satnav installed in the dash. Noooo!!! Remember the average lifetime of your Morgan is hopefully much longer than the lifetime of your average piece of consumer electronics. You'd be more than happy with your mog after 5 years, but how about a 5-year-old built-in Satnav that can't be upgraded?

Julf - a 'new build' MGB is nowhere near as good as a recent trad Mog. Dave, I fully agree - but that just strengthens my point. The trad Mog doesn't have any real competition, while the Aero/Aeromax/AeroLux/whatever line does have serious competition.
