I've posted railway bits and pieces over the years, but to be honest, since I got a Morgan, the railway has taken second place. But the benefit of railway modelling in the loft is that you can leave it for long periods, and then get back into it as and when. This year I resolved to get more landscaping sorted out. Ballasting in particular is very time consuming, and requires gymnastic contortions to get into very tight and fiddly spaces. Anyway I've made a huge leap forward at hardly any cost - miniature stone chippings come cheap! So today I took a few updated photos. There's still a huge amount to do on the other side of the loft, which is un-ballasted and without scenic additions so far. I won't bore you all with captions, but just let me know if you have any questions. The location is loosely based in North Devon with a mix of Western Region and Southern Region motive power, and obviously long distance Midland trains - in the style of Exeter in the fifties and sixties.

Before I read the text and looked at the other photos and only the first I thought it was an arty type shot of a real set of older tracks somewhere.

I'm Full of envy Dave. For someone so 'polished' your modelling and aging is excellent.

I got very interested when my son was young but moving home a few times prevented getting this involved.

As part of the Declutter, the old and then rusty 10ft x 3ft layout from my shed went in the skip when we moved and the Engines and rolling stock was sold on ebay where it proved to be very popular.

I am impressed, not only does it look good, but I was also fooled by the first photo, thinking your photo skills are also terrific to get that old disused railway shot. How do you get the time for this and the Morgans.

Wonderful. My brother has a huge setup that he works at with a passion. We had a lot of fun a couple of years ago putting together a small one with our boy who hasn't looked at it since :-(

Thanks for the compliments chaps. It's hard finding time but recently I found some. It's a contradiction isn't it that a concourse buff can enjoy weathering stuff to look old. Most layouts don't look half dirty enough so that's the look I'm after. I use gridding tape to mask the rail heads then start by spraying on the grime. The scenic scatter is very relaxing to work with. The landscape is artex over a paper mache base, base coated with brown emulsion. The whole thing rests on rubberised carpet underlay, so there's loads of hidden rubber Steve!

What no neoprene?

You'll be getting Adrian thinking he can bottle up the grime from when he takes his exhaust pipes off for a good clean!
