I promised to post some pics of my luggage solution so here they are.
The first shows the frame folded. Next fitted and the cases clip on and lock so no straps needed. The high brake light shows through. The cases hold a massive amount and can be carried into a hotel. Basically it's a set of bike panniers with the framework adapted. I had to make the triangular plate that fits to the luggage rack. The (white where the black paint has worn off) clips are plumbers water pipe clips which rotate merrily to fit. It all takes about 3 minutes to fit and is totally secure.

Ii have narrowed my search down now - capacity and dimensions are the key things (together with price). Now need time to go and see some at a dealer to see the mounts and ask some questions.

My short list is now (based on min 40l each):

I also need to know if the mounts can be set so that the longest dimension of the pannier is front to back on the car rather than side to side - this makes the whole look a lot better at the sizes I am looking for.

Trouble is, I cannot find the mounting kits online - the Givi web site is appalling.

There are plenty on Ebay depending on what pannier system you go for. All you need is to make up some fittings to mount the frames to your luggage rack, you could probably adapt this kind of thing to suit.

Don't panic mate, remember we use points for decimal separators, not commas! RS components, for some reason known only to themselves, price things down to the thousands of a pound and then round it when the complete total is calculated. I guess it's because they are used to selling thousands of items at a time, maybe?

Those brackets are only £5 and 60 pence

I still want to see one to satisfy myself that me planned mounting methods will work. I was thinking of using P-Clips or even badge mounting clips - not sure on that one yet.

I'm thinking along similar lines. A few years ago I did a prototype setup with the Givi topbox and rear rack from my old motorcycle. It was pretty easy to mount the Givi rack onto my rear rack, and the box was very secure, but I wasn't entirely happy with the way my rearwards view was obscured, and with the fact that the mounting plate obstructed the spare wheel bolt. If I had a puncture I would have to unbolt the mounting

But since then I've fitted better door mirrors that give a much wider view, so the rearwards vision isn't a problem any more. I'm now considering making up some custom fixings that I can 3D print. That way I can dispense with the original rack and so be able to get to the spare wheel easily should I get a puncture.
