I had five of these over the last fifteen years and I can confirm they are a car.
And a fast car that is!
I raced on the Nordschlieffe with one for 24 hours racing and we finished 17th overall against much more potent and expensive cars like Viper, Porsche RSR, Corvette and M3

I'd agree with that. This is the spec of the latest Caterham 7 CSR Superlight Engine: 2.3 litre Cosworth Duratec Max Power (bhp/rpm) 260bhp @ 7500 Max Torque (lbs ft/rpm) 200 @ 6200 Weight 550kg 0-60mph 3.1 Seconds Power-to-weight 472bhp-per-tonne Top Speed 155mph G

I've seen some very rapid Caterhams at Goodwood - gokart handling and power to weight that embarrasses a lot of 'supercars'. Personally, I don't fit in them; however, I do like the idea. On a side note, I'd still love to have seen BtG fitting into his Westfield when he owned it - I just can't imagine it.
