Electrical fire

I had an electrical fire today because someone had fitted a screw to hold the battery access panel that was over long & went through the main power lead before the 80 amp fuse.
Unfortunately we have fitted a wire cable to secure luggage. That wire touched the live plate and earthed it.

Being inside a Mog with the hood up full of smoke wasn't fun and I burnt my hand moving the wire cable. The car now has burn marks on the leather & the carpets and the heated seat wires are damaged with melted insulation.

This year really has been a bad one for Morgan ownership. I had only just collected the car & now it will be back at the dealer on Saturday.

We all keep stuff behind the seats so please check your screws are not long enough to pass through the wood & cut into the cable. The power was such that the current passed through the rear valance carpet & melted that on the inside.

I have my Mog on charge in the garage and leant down behind it the other day and got a nasty shock off the chrome ring around the rear brake light

Not sure what that means in terms of electrics but probably not great

. Get it checked Stewart, you shouldn't be having mains power grounding through the car.

.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Stewart make sure you have an Earth Leakage Breaker on your garage feed for your own safety if you don't already. This sounds more as if the 12 volts is leaking across the light fitting to me and you provided the earth leaning across the body of the car, but without putting a meter on it difficult to determine.

Stewart,
I would get it checked and as Rich always have earth leakage breakers on the 240 supply. It is probably a short due to corrosion in the bulb holder assembly.

That is frightening - it could have been a lot worse.

Good luck with sorting things out.

I think I will research nut-serts or similar and modify my car after seeing that.

Jeez, sorry to hear that, especially on top of your earlier woes. I do hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction.

Yes I agree I am already on it , including thinking about a wooden panel instead.

That is worrying, I will check mine to make sure it's safe.

Glad you're ok John, that could easily have been a much more serious incident. I have a luggage wire fitted as well but it has a plastic coating, never have thought the coating might prevent an accident like yours happening.

Not to hijack your thread but whilst at my local chandler at the weekend he showed me a new gadget called fire suppression system, available in 3 different release times and works on every type of fire. Very compact and easy to store in a Morgan, I bought the 25 second model. Its apparently capable of putting out an engine fire. Oh and it doesn't ruin what you spray it on !!

Check them out online, jay Leno also featured something similar on his programme. Could be a life saver!!
No connection, just a concern to keep fellow Mog owners safe.
