Yup your spot on I remember standing in front of BL dealer technicians back in the 70’s at the BL Training School explaining why they were like that (the reason you gave) and of course they rejected the information saying we probably just got Lucas to make the fans for us. Even back then we knew most stuff made by Lucas was suspect ;-).

Greetings All

After being sidetracked by a month in New Zealand I finally have it down to the bare chassis... Cut it back hard with the wire brush on my angle grinder to expose all the tin-worm..... Few hours work there to rectify, but nothing fatal.... Now about to make the templates and cut the stainless panels to repair the bottom of the bulkhead and rear sections of the inner valances so all the welding can be done in one go.... Then I can dummy fit the bulkhead/valances to the chassis and start building up the woodwork... Onwards and Upwards!! .... K

It never ceases to amaze me how little there is to a Morgan Trad Chassis..., yet how effective and resilient it is.

I agree.... Coming from racing where everything is multiple triangulated with short straight lengths of seamless tube it looks fairly minimalistic!!.. However it's lasted the best part of half a century and the work needed is down to neglect.... I found it interesting to contrast the untouched perfect steel in the centre of the car downstream of the engine and gearbox oil weepage with the state of the perimeter rails... If the previous owners had just sprayed the leftovers from each oil change liberally underneath, the chassis would be a good as gold!!

Just in from completing the first of the stainless steel repair panels for the lower bulkhead.... Reasonably straightforward job

My Dad used to spray the used engine oil over the inner wings, the cills and any box section he could find.
No rust, but the thing used to drip oil everywhere on a hot day and it smelt a bit!
I think it was a Standard 8 or something.
A long, long time ago!

As you typed, given it`s age, the old chassis is looking good, not a lot of welding to sort it out for another fifty years or so. It will be great to see it all coming back together Keith.

It's looking good. On my rust I'm using a product called Fertan rust converter.

Once the rusty bits are cut out and replaced with good metal the whole chassis will be sand blasted, two-pack primed and then coated... Same with the bulkhead and front inner valances.... Hopefully that will see off the rust.... Loads of waxoyl on assembly will help as well..... Still plenty to do but at least it's heading in the right direction!! :-)

Chassis repaired and stainless replacement panels welded into the bulkhead... Still some fine tuning to do but much happier now the Tinworm has been replaced!..... Currently on with the inner valances in the same way.... Waiting on my local carpentry shop getting the ash for the last bits of woodwork needed then I can do a dummy build to get everything fitting right body-wise before pulling it all down again for paint.... Onwards and Upwards

Last patch in the 'underpinnings'.... Passenger side inner wing...... Sometimes Morgan shoot themselves in the foot... See how the pressed strengthening rib forms a tube guiding water straight into the join between the inner wing and bulkhead when it's bolted together... Corrosion death-wish.... Will pack that with mastic on assembly. Dummy build next thing but have a few day's to wait for the last of the wood so will clean and paint the fuel tank and rear axle while I'm waiting.
