Morgan Plus Four Super Sports
Hot off the producation line, the pre-production Plus Four SS was out over the weekend at Oulton Park and Shelsley Walsh.
It certainly created a lot of interest and especially the fine detailing that makes this a special model. Sorry about the number of images showing the dashboard but it really is a work of art.
Oh, and the car goes quite well too!
It will be at Donnington at the end of the month.

Well, I've been giving this some thought.......... dislikes: No spare wheel - it's the look I don't like rather than the concept. Clear indicators with that colour. I'm beginning to sound like Gerwyn.......... DaveW you have hit the perverbial nail on the head (again ) Now the lack of spare wheel is I agree a worry. Here was a golden opportunity in the space avilable to include that rare beast in a Morgan----A LOCKABLE BOOT!!!!---But I guess the added cost would have made the whole purpose of excluding the rear wheel counter productive? For design guidance I would hark back to the beautiful MGTF with the slab chromed edged petrol tank complete with luggage rack attached---this could have made a super shape for a boot (imho)!! Instead the fussy vents on the new Morgan sport rear wheel position just look like an afterthought---there to fill in a large expanse of flat space!!! ---and disappointed! Some elements I particularly liked though are toggle switches/steering wheel---again would look good with the ivory retro instuments with a painted dash.

But surely David, the concept of this car is as a "competition" one, hence the lack of spare and the vented tail?
I'm new into Morgans and so still in the first flush of love but I really can't see what all the fuss is about over a marketing exercise by Morgan. They are sure to sell them all to those who are attracted to them and the rest of us can enjoy our personal "Bespoke" cars! Part of the attraction for me getting the 4/4 Sport was that I can make it my own; the fun will be adding bits to it and tuning it. Ok, there are more powerful 2 litre Duratec Caterhams and Westfields available but surely they attract a different customer. If I really wanted a fast no frills car that handled well for track days I'd have picked up a Caterham but its the traditional aspect of the Morgan that attracts me.

I'm inclined to agree with a lot of what Jay has said. This car was borne out of the product development Aero Racing have been doing for both road use and competition. The first 4/4 Sport was built with the Track Pack and since then, Tim and the chaps at Aero Racing have been working with various motorsport and performance modification companies to create an extensive line of upgrades for the Classic Morgan line. The Plus 4 SS is the result of a lot of this time and effort. Lotus 7s and the derivatives have never appealed to me. If I wanted to have the raw, exposed to the elements experience, I'd buy an Ariel Atom or a KTM X-Bow. To my mind, the 4/4 Sport, Plus 4 Sport or Plus 4 SS, fitted with Track Pack are the perfect compromise between the good looks of the traditional Morgan sports car, top down motoring BUT the all important weather protection for our typical British weather, coupled with the ability to track and enjoy the car in a high performance environment when and if the mood takes. As for the looks of the car, I personally like it... a lot! However, I appreciate that some like a blank canvas to work their own upgrade magic on, where as, others will appreciate the references to the racing Morgans of the 1960s and like the detail touches that combine to make the Plus 4 SS. I'd also add that having modified a car before, I know that when the bug bites, it tends to bite hard , leaving budget and time scales in tatters; therefore, for some of us, this may be the less expensive option once the dust has settled.

Despite all the rantings and ravings, it is just another gorgeous Morgan, with cosmetic updates, and yet again... without a bloody spare wheel. I wonder if it comes with membership to the AA? or is there a canister of "Finieleak", puncture repair in the glove-box! what simple bod would buy a car without a spare wheel, even if only a run flat or cardboard replica of a real one?

I just think that 'limited options' and bespoke manufacture sit uncomfortably together. It's clearly a marketing strategy, and the Supersports will sell easily, even at that price, but as somebody who is not interested in racing or track days, I feel that the racing emphasis is too great. I would like to see more bespoke options than there presently are, especially the 2L engine in the 4/4 body, and the two plus four gauge dash layout. That might just persuade me to spec up a new Morgan. As it stands I could only achieve that by having a 4/4 dealt with by a company who had the credentials to do the engine swop.

I admit it is a little short of low speed torque but that is about all that 's lacking, it thrives on being reved hard and is immense fun there is more performance on tap than most roads can cope with. A local zetec 4/4 has had a successful 2L transplant by Mogsport, I don't know the costs involved but if I was looking for more performance than my 4/4 Sport delivers I would skip the 2L and go for a Roadster. Which brings us neatly back to where you are now

Yep, a real dilemma. I need to try a 4/4 sport but I want a spare wheel in a hole.................
I love the narrow body look , and the green racer (Jim Mountain's I recall) looks fabulous. ButI would also want the 2L, for flexibility. I expect a transplant will be costly, but on a used bespoke 4/4, (LM62 for example) - far less than the Supersport, and the dash would be right for me already.
This is just talk for now, and me fantasising about what next. But I don't see me selling the Roadster.

Simple Jay ...and all the Aero owners I'd be interested to see what the power to weight ratio is on the +4 SS vs the Roadster. The Escape V6 isn't a light engine and develops 226bhp. Morgan are quoting over 200bhp for the +4 SS 2.0 and as has been discussed on this thread, that isn't close to the top output of a tuned 2.0.
