How do you remove the rear transmission tunnel section in a post 2006 4 seater to access the differential etc?

It's a horror! I'm not sure you can get to everything without disassembling the whole back end. I have a 2013 +4 4 seater and have removed the backseats and put in a large luggage space. On remove the over engineered scaffold system that supports the rear seats and the seat belt assemblies, I found that this had been an anvil for the diff to pound on, which explained the crashing thud I used to get going over pot holes and sleepers; this had obviously been happening from new, witnessed by the large wedge shaped scar with no rust or dirt.....If yours suffers from a very sharp thud, this may be the cause.

All I want to remove is the cover so I can access the top of the diff for easier oil changes?

Having seen my 2008 4 seat in build I think you will find it can’t be done (and I come from the school of anything can be done if you throw enough effort at it) the whole structure is a welded unit and I would imagine forms an integral part of the structural build.

I wanted more space and touring capacity so removed the back rests so we could fit much more baggage inside the car. The centre section was a pain as it was polished wood so I had a padded leather cover made for it as SWMBO tended to throw the bags in!

Hey Colin, just saw your question on this post. I presume due to the age of the post that you have solved the riddle. If not, the answer is that there are hidden wood screws either side of the tunnel. These screw into blocks of wood that are fixed to the centre console. You find them by running a finger just under the wood (or leather) console top, i.e. where the carpet joins the console. Patience required but you will feel the heads of the wood screws. I would suggest to mark the position of these with some masking tape on the wood console so that you can find the holes to re-assemble and when you need to get them out next time. I have a pic of mine but I can't work out how to add it to this thread so contacts me if you need it.

Just pour your clean diff oil into one of those pump bottles with a tube feed and metal U bend and work from underneath...easy 10 min job, after all you're underneath to drain it anyway
