We arrived early this morning at Fleet Service Station and parked up and went in for a bacon sarnie and a coffee.

When we came out we were chatting with some of the new Supercar arrivals standing at the back of the car, when a member of the public pointed out that one of the front tyres was punctured. Initially, we could not see what had caused this so tried a cannister of goo...

It did not work and so when the breakdown truck arrived the driver examined the tyre carefully by hand, and found what was a pretty invisible cut. He inserted his vehicle keys in it and in his opinion, the tyre had been punctured by a sharp knife in the sidewall and it had gone straight down.

It's a strange country we live in these days!

P.S. The only plus is that the wheel was not damaged.

Being mild of nature they should round up these rioting malicious people and brand their foreheads, as they act like cattle. Asbo's suggestion for a brand seems good but without the stars.

Could this have been road damage?
I once clipped a hidden kerb on a stretch of flooded road, and it put a three inch gash in the sidewall. Although the tyre went down immediately................(not the Mog by the way).

I recently had a run-in with a piece of discarded garden shed (I'd like to think it was on the way to the dump and fell off, rather than got dumped) and it left a very similar hole in the sidewall. It actually pierced the tyre wall and came out further along. You'd never have guessed a thin piece of wood with a few nails through it could do the damage that occurred.

I'd like to think you were unlucky rather than a victim of riots and looting at Fleet Services

Many thanks guys for your posts, I really do appreciate them. As Kin says it could have been much worse if they had damaged the paint, that would have been really expensive!

I did speak to someone at Fleet Service to see if they could check and see if anything could be seen on the CCTV, but quite frankly, I didn't have a lot of luck. It was almost as if this was a common occurrence.

Micheldever have been excellent at finding a Toyo 225/35 ZR19 tyre and couriering it to their local branch, there aren't many in the country apparently and it should be fitted tomorrow. Camskill, who we've used in the past, replied by email saying "Due to Toyos plant being at Sendai Japan, we have no confirmed dates of more stock."

Dave and Simon: don't remember hitting anything on the road and the tyre was inflated when we left it at Fleet as the steering was perfectly normal. We'll see what the Micheldever fitter thinks when he changes the tyre, as the tyre must have gone down immediately it was punctured from the size of the hole?

The only problem I have with yours and DaveW suggestion Simon, is that if you were belting along the motorway and received an inch gash in the tyre wall like Brian shows, the escape of air would definately not be slow, and as a consequence I doubt you would be pulling over gently to the hard shoulder to inspect.The only other slim unlikely possibilty is it happening as he approached the parking space.-----There seems like only one sad option to me, and a shi**y one it is.
