MOG414_ one-off 14.5ins steering wheel
Back in 2017, my better half told me that she was getting a new steering wheel for Ms Marple for Christmas...I 'objected' and convinced her that I was going to design and fabricate my own since I wanted a 14.5 ins diameter which is smaller than the standard size. It does improve getting in and out behind the wheel and not really that hard to turn even with car static.
Normally 3/16" thickness is used but I opted for thicker aircraft grade 2024 T4 alloy x 0.25" thick so that I was able to hand file the chamfered edges. Plywood rims are screwed on (stainless and polished) instead of the normal rivets so that if or better when they get scratched, it will be easy to unscrew, sand and re-apply clear epoxy resin. All parts were hand cut and filed, sanded, finished and polished by hand. Centre boss, which clips on, was laser engraved after I prepared line artwork of the Morgan 4/4 logo.
Attached are images of the fabrication sequence.
