Bringing it home... Runner and driver but various body woes :-)

Finding myself with an unexpectedly liberated weekend I realised I'd not posted any pics of the rebuild for ages .... the car is a driveable lump now so I'll post some catch-up pics in dribs and drabs until I'm up to date .... sorry for the neglect ... but it's the racing season!! 😁


First there's rot

All the rust and old bondo bashed out .... bit of a state but I try to save as much of the original metal as possible ..... metal repaired with inserts of 0.7mm stainless steel welded in .... bit fiddly but returns the strength to the edge ... then as little filler as I can get away with and a couple of good coats of two-pack primer .... now gloss black and back on the car ... decent enough job for a car that is not intended to be pampered

Have retrimmed most of the interior .... another blessing of having one of the much more basic older cars is that the trim is just leathercloth over thin ply held on with stainless screws and cup washers, so well within the scope of 'garage-skills' ... nothing fancy but practical and easy to replace when it inevitable gets bashed and shabby!

Nice job! I completely agree with the simplicity of leather cloth over ply, although when I re-did mine i included a layer of laminate floor underlay to give a slightly softer effect, so clearly I'm a southern softie!

When did they start putting the door aperture in? My 1986 cars has got them, but your 1970s car doesn't?

You have screws? Dead posh! Mine are nailed on......

I'm also without door apertures, it's on the list of things to add.

Mine were nailed but as I was starting again from scratch I went the 'luxury' route (I like to think I've become more sophisticated with age! ....I mean, I've bin to collidge an everyfink!!).

You notice I say it's a 'driveable lump' rather than 'finished' (are they ever??) .... still some odd trim bits and detail to do .... plus a list of 'upgrades' for future consideration .... door pockets being one of them.

Hamwich ... padded trim!! .... pretty much as good as airbags in my book!! 😄

OTOH I have still failed to replace the dashboard top padding after I removed it in 2003. My car is very definitely in the 'drivable lump' category and has been since I bought it 22 years ago, there's always something on the To Do list.

I do find the door apertures on my mid 80`s +8 to be very handy for sun glasses and the likes. As for "nails" TBM, when Kevin restored my Mog he of course used stainless steel pins to mount the door panels...

Whatever the material, pins and nails hark directly back to club-wielding Neanderthals rather than the finely made and deftly controlled screw threads from the peak of the Industrial Revolution .... I'm sharing a forum with barbarians!!! 😁

K, It seems Luddites were pretty handy with clubs too, perhaps best not to upset them..
