Orkney

Waiting for the ferry, hood up incase things got a little rough, needn't have worried, flat calm and wall to wall sunshine for the entire one hour crossing. I'll post more pics if this is successful.

Typical, I couldn't get the pic to attach, now it's there twice 🤣

No pictures allowed inside Maeshowe but this is Unston chambered cairn which is similar.

That'll be the straw backed chair Richard? Funnily enough the miller at Barony told us about them. The straw from the bere grain that he mills is used for weaving the back. We'd not seen one at that point but there's one in the b&b were in tonight.

That's the one Gordon.
Pity you couldn't go in Maeshowe back in the 80's we could.

You can still get inside as part of the guided tour only, which we did. Just not allowed to take pictures inside because they want to sell you the guide book I suspect. But maybe I'm being cynical 🤣

Back down in St Margarets hope today ready for the ferry tomorrow. There's a small blacksmiths museum in the village where I remember way too much of the exhibits, never seen this before though.

Stopped in past Orphir on the way down

A visit to Stromness museum in the morning. You could seriously spend your whole holiday in there and still not see everything. Highly recommend.

And the original Orkney chair mentioned in the previous post. Made in Sandy from driftwood.

Love the character in that chair thumbs it could tell a few tales..

Our Transmitting Station was at Dounby and we stayed nearby overlooking Harray Loch where the fishing was excellent.

I don't play golf but they used to hold a longest day match on the Island when we stayed there after sunset, I wonder if they still do.
