Had a bit of business to do in England last week, I enjoyed experiencing city life but I was a square peg in a round hole. The weather was cold and grim so I bought a jumper is a store called “moss”, three staff at the till and only me for a customer, they refused my Royal Bank of Scotland £20 notes!
“It’s cause eu” one said 😂, what a bunch of muppets!!
I didn’t say anything, I still bought the jumper, in fact after paying with English notes I went back in the changing room and put it on, on the way out the manager walked by so I stopped him and told him how I’d been embarrassed at the check out, he states “ it’s company policy, there’s lots of counterfeit Scottish notes.” Brave business decision,four people to pay and only one customer I said, the girl at the till called over,” you didn’t get your change “ keep it, you need it more than me” hopefully the had a laugh about it and maybe they’ll learn some people skills.
There was a bit of protesting going on too, harmless enough but there’s nobody except me even looking and I don’t think they liked the look of me

Sorry you had that experience, though I am aware that businesses aren't legally required to accept Bank of Scotland notes as they aren't legal tender in England, so acceptance depends on the shop's discretion, though they are backed by the Bank of England and are legitimate currency, so many places will take them, while some may refuse due to unfamiliarity.

Birmingham ... not somewhere that I've been to for years, but then I avoid cities like the plague unless there's some exhibition we fancy a look at ... as you say, muppets ... any decent sized shop should have their act together to process Scottish notes (though I suspect a lot of them don't want to be dealing with cash at all these days so any excuse) ... always someone protesting in any city centre these days ... makes you wonder what they do for a living ... it's just become background noise ... not a good thing as, although protest is a democratic right, ordinary people are becoming sick of the constant disruption and sooner or later will ignore restrictions being put on it just for some peace and quiet.

Ps ... ironically, I had a similar experience using Northern Ireland notes in the Broch ... ended up taking them to the bank 🙂

Funnily enough - and I didn't know this one - it seems that Bank of England AND Bank of Scotland notes are not legal tender in Scotland, though I've never had any issues.

Hamster, thanks for the info, I’ve always known money is just numbers and trust, even my current account and cards were blocked recently when I tried to pay for a forthcoming car trip, maybe my age has triggered a new level of dogoodery by the bank, I’m feel 30 but I’m 56, I guess even an optimist has to admit that’s beyond middle age😂

Third-degree if you try to take any significant amount out of your account in cash ... thought I was an adult! ... You're my bank not my Mum!! 🙂

Still fondly think of myself as 'late middle-age' ... and then I count the number of 150 year old people I know! 🙂 .... getting into the mindset of spending money while I still can ... my days are numbered so statistically not many of them are likely to be the rainy ones I saved for 😆

Will have a genny repair to pick up before long ... hopefully you'll be about for a catch-up 👍

Ewan, If you found time to watch the vid, hopefully you found some interest in the conversation being a tad different from the norm... Also thanks for posting your pics of the interesting architecture and local cultural issues which it seems not to uncommon in parts of England, here in the Central West of Scotland such issues were more down to Irish immigration which displayed it`s self in the religious sense when Rangers played Celtic, though in truth I am unsure of how many supporters ever saw the inside of a church... When as aa kid looking for my first job, the first question usually asked was "Which school did you go to." Fortunately over the years the Protestant Vs Catholic religious divide seems to have all but disappeared, except in the football environment...! We have ever had our share of Indian and Pakistani communities, though having typed that, I have seen a notable increase of black skinned folk in the last few years. Evolution in progress towards ever more multiculturism..
Yup had similar Scottish currency issues in England too, though also in Cyprus..(-: I handed a shopkeeper a fresh Scottish £20 note, he dug out a publication with pictures of all sorts of different currencies and agreed the note was likely to be "real" and added that it was a really nice design... I paid him with English currency, to save any concern..(-:

K, I had a similar frustrating experience at the bank when trying to withdraw a few bob relative to my septic tank upgrade.... My Luddite tendencies did cause me to suggest that such a simple process was so much less fuss on a face to face basis in times past when visiting a branch office, than it is in this so much more advanced digital age...! I too have taken time to reconsider financial realities, from a time when the value in my sports car was ever thought of as the first thing to be cashed in if ever one of life`s little emergencies might crop up. Today it seems the little expensive emergencies are more likely to be caused by my modern sports car, given all the high tec...err... "stuff" built into it...!!!

Cockles.
Welshcakes. 1Welshcake = 10 cockles.

1oz = 10 Welshcakes.

1Can of Felinfoel Double Dragon gets you admittance anywhere.

Draught Double Dragon is only allowed for true West Walians, the licence to drink it is granted by the Arch Druid and the Sword carrier ( Robin mcBride) will be calling to non licence holder with his sword drawn and asking " Oes heddwych?"

Bartering in an elegant currency, we all do it from time to time and just like banknotes, it’s all based on trust. However, not so sure that my bank would have a big enough safe for welshcakes and Lavernread😂
The primary purpose of commerce should be to generate profit, the legality of tender only matters if the bank won’t take it, all banks will take Scottish, Irish and English notes, not sure Welsh notes exist but they’ll take those too if they do. Counterfeit notes are the only ones they should be concerned about, those mutton heads in the Moss shop wouldn’t know a fake English notes, they didn’t give my real ones a look at all.

I couldn't see the cat in the picture, reminds me of Mr R Whittington and colleague and his exploits in ' the big smoke'. Buying that jumper sounds like a bit of a pantomime. Been there done that. Some local stores around here don't like taking cash at all, then others will only deal in cash. Strange old world.English shops are not legally obliged to accept Scottish banknotes. Living close to Blackpool we used to have the scottish weeks in summer where they all came to Blackpool and all the local notes circulating around that time would be scottish, so shops had little choice but to accept them..Also known to be problematic weeks, for many years some of the Scottish Police usually from Glasgow used to come down for the fortnight, to help local Police keep tabs on those known up North for their problematic approach to life.
