There’s a group of seven deer bounding around on my hill, beautiful sight as are the pheasants.

That’s not even the biggest dumper Volvo makes in Scotland, this one was 76 tons as seen, the wheel are another truck load on their own. It got to be at least a million quid but compared to a car, the cost per ton will be quite reasonable.😁

We're riddled with deer here (we get Reds through as well) ... not really compatible with new forestry (or gardens!) but love seeing them so just let it ride.

Off down to spend a few days with my petrolhead nephew later this week ... he runs the servicing for Hydrema UK ... Danish company making earthmovers and the odd military machine ... I have a soft spot for big construction machinery! ...will no doubt visit his work sometime during the proceedings 🙂

Great set of pictures, I remember passing the factory many times on my journeying up and down the road, is it Cumbernauld.

The deer population down here in the South Hams has to be controlled as TB is absolutely rife and they like badgers are major vectors in the spread of the disease.

Badger piss can stay live in the pastures for at least a month after it has transitted as their sugar content is so high it survives, they also feed in the cattle stall troughs and urinate.


Don't care for vicious brocks but do about the deer so putting a few of them out of their misery is a good thing, your climatology up there is totally different so you don't suffer in the same way.

Glad to say my heart leaps at the sight of the red deer in our locale - within 20Mtrs at times.

Liked all the photos but the mushroom picture really made me smile. I'm sure someone will remind me of the actual name but one popped up in my back garden a few years back and I too couldn't help but take a photo of it. I guess the link to old fairytales and illustrations makes them so emotive but, to me, they really seem quite special; perhaps more so because I don't see them very often.

Interested to see the pics of the Volvo earth-moving equipment, takes me back to my teens, when the first large and modern factory I worked in was that of Euclid in Uddingston a town the East of Glasgow. It was the first large American owned company that I had worked in, and where they built similar huge dumpers, in time I think the Uddingston plant may have been taken over by Caterpillar..It is interesting to think of U.S. companies setting up in Scotland the first I knew of was Singer (sewing machines, not Porsche) in Clydebank which set world records at the time, Burroughs machines in both Cumbernauld and Dumbarton, there was also an IBM manufacturing facility in Greenock around the time when the idea of creating a Silicon Glen in Fyfe was on the cards, the last US backed/owned factory I worked in was SGS Fairchild in Falkirk who manufactured computer chips, seems evolutionary processes combined with the advantages of globalisation, may have found higher profit margins elsewhere...? It was good while it lasted... (-:

On the subject of American 🇺🇸 manufacturing, here in Peterhead we had both a Euclid gearbox factory and a Cleveland twist drill factory, gone now but good businesses at the time.
