Chris would love to know how the car train works for you & the cost. That really cuts out the boring bits.

Same here John; will look forward to hearing how Chris gets on.

Calais to Düsseldorf is just over four hours - where as Calais to Innsbruck is circa 11 (without fuel / breaks).

I've done this route many times over the past three decades and generally go via France towards Strasbourg, before heading back into Germany for the last stretch to Austria. Whilst I used to enjoy the German Autobahn, now, and in particular, this route, seems to have constant 'improvement' projects, that feel never ending and play havoc with the traffic (Pforzheim to Munich getting a particular mention).

Missing out that section alone, would be welcome; whilst I've never taken the train, I've spoken with Austrian / Dutch / German colleagues who have and they felt it was worthwhile. Thus, Chris's feedback will be very interesting.

Have a great holiday Chris. cheers

The Dusseldorof train is just too far north for us and as I have driven from Calais through Germany to Slovenia for approaching 20 years, normally through the night it is an easy trip . Roads have got more used overnight in the last 5 years . Last year was really bad.
Simon, I don’t go your way , have done once but prefer a virtual toll free route :
Tournai
Charleroi
Namur, what a poor road surface to Lux.
Luxenberg for cheap fill up and get to Slovenia on fumes last 20 kilometers.
Saarbrucken
Then a short cut through Shoe Alley, Permasens , off the A8 to Landau . . Road being upgraded due to lorry use but go at night and my wife cannot stop at the 30 shoe shops ….
Stuttgart, Munich into Austria and down to Villach and in……
Leave at 5, or 6 pm on the Shuttle , drive through the night, easier on the constant road upgrades in Germany and Austria and breakfast or brunch in Slovenia.
I have a friend who drives much faster than me, from further away in Slovenia, towards the Hungary border, uses your French route and often it’s 12 /13 hours to Calais! Volvo are now limiting their cars to 112 mph which means I cannot buy a new one as that limits autobahn speed when unrestricted.
This trip I start near Madrid to Slovenia and intend to have a slow drive enjoying the scenery.
Looking forward to pictures from West Chinnock Chris.
MM
