FolkMog celebrates the MSCC 75th 5.8.26

In deepest darkest Suffolk 50 Mogs & 100 Morganeers met up to celebrate the 75th.

With Plus Four & Supersports demo drives from Krazy Horse , detailing demos from MaJ and the band Not Dead Yet we had a great time supported by Nick & his team at the Old Mill House, Saxted Green.

The cost was £15 per person but each car got a goody bag & Krazy Horse provided a voucher for a free MOT meaning you made money!

The weather was warm but cloudy so a good day was had by all.

This was a very special gathering. The day was the culmination of 6 months collaboration between the 4 person FolkMog organising team, the pub licensee, Krazy Horse, MaJ Clean and Detail, the band and various suppliers and sponsors.

We had red, white and blue Morgans forming a very patriotic line up. Guests from CranMog and AngleMog were welcomed. A huge proportion of FolkMog members were in attendance.

On final reckoning, the £15 cost per person proved sufficient to match our expenditure.

A great time was had by all and the foundations for FolkMog’s future success have been well and truly laid.

That was me. It’s a Synchromatic Nashville in Cadillac Green. It’s a chunky thing to play but has become my go-to gig guitar. I think it suited the ambience of what was a fantastic day perfectly. Huge thanks and congratulations to John and Chris from here, and everyone else involved in the organisation for a fabulous event.

I do love a Gretsch. I'd like to show you a photo of my White Falcon, but I can't. It's more a White Sparrow - a Chinese copy, but a tenth of the price of a real one. Bought as a homage to my favourite guitarist, and in fairness, my guitar playing is more of a chinese copy.......

The Synchromatic series are new for Gretsch. They are built like the classic Gretsches but made in China to keep them affordable. I'm not proud - made abroad is made abroad to me wherever that is! From the Filtertron pick ups to the Bigsby and the knobs and dials it's incredibly solid. And yes, it stays in tune really well! I'd love a Gretsch Nashville 6120 but they're around the £4k mark which is a bit risky to gig at the sort of places I go to!

I was referring to TBM's one. As an aside I did once own a genuine 1958 orange 6120 which had a custom wide neck. I ended up corresponding with a man in USA who had worked at the factory then. It was the most beautiful guitar I've ever owned. Gold bits and the vibrato arm was wiggly like Chet's. Fabulous sound but woeful for live use..it would not stay in tune for 3 minutes. I nearly sold it to a famous pop chap I knew at the time but he said he wouldn't dare take it on the road. Sadly for my morale, eventually someone offered me so much money for it that I couldn't resist selling it. I've kind of regretted it ever since, but I never used it properly, I always used a strat for gigging.
Wonderful thing it was though.

As part of a group who drive imperfect cars, who's foibles attract the ingenuity of owners and mechanics to solve rhe imperfections .... it seens odd that the Gretsch community and associated luthiers haven't come up with a fix for the unstable tuning ... they're so alike ... niche, beautiful, the 'road less travelled' and have a dedicated following in spite of logic. 🙂

K

Ps ... like cars and Hi'Fi, the UK does produce some fine specialist guitars ... and if you want something 'vintage' there's always Burns .... much under-rated.

I have a long history with Burns guitars, I've owned many of them. At one time around 1981 when Jim Burns had restarted the company near Cambridge, Littleport, they closed again and I shot up and bought all the remaining bodies and necks from their little factory. There's an interesting connection between Burns and Gtresch too. Baldwin bought both companies within a couple of years.
Lots I could say but I've just remembered this is a car forum.....
Oh, and British hifi...anyone remember Tripletone?
Anyone wanting a pair of quad electrostatics?
