Don't need chains - just check the webcams before setting off. Most key passes have a live camera feed from them somewhere online.
Should be alright midsummer - key is to avoid peak holiday times - it's not much fun doing the passes in a queue of caravans. Watch out for bikes too - some of them are a bit crazy...
